Default How I Spent My Summer Vacation

Geoff,

It is time to update the website, as the pages about the softskins is now not correct anymore. The last picture of a lonely 15 cwt truck sitting out in Western Canada waiting to be restored is somewhat outdated now.

The wife and I went out and grabbed it and brought it back home to my place in Ontario.

.. and took the roof and windscreen off.

Hopefully this would assist in the cab 13s aerodynamic performance on the highway.

I needed to be back a work soon, so the CMP needed to move along at 75 miles per hour for the return trip.

How to get that truck up onto the trailer?

Those of you who know me have probably guessed that I was not going to hand crank that CMP onto my trailer, so this is how we urged the old truck behind the new truck.

The cab 13 has the original 216 in it - with some "issues".

I plan to get another 216 later this week in Ohio - a runner to slip back into the frame rails until I can diagnose the ills.

Picture 4. Jim steers while Stewart provides the power to get the old warhorse onto the trailer. The 9,000 pound SuperWinch worked like a charm!

Fear not safety watchers - the action had stopped while Jim cranked the nonpower steering a little. My lovely wife snuck in for a closer shot while the coast was clear. Note the careful hook placement and chain over winch cable. Jim had seen cables break while recovering sickly Leopards in the army, and didnt want to have to drive me to the hospital.

Loaded.

It's just that easy!

Jim's wife was happy, and my wife had not had enough time slip by to know what had transpired - hahaha!

Jim also supplied all manner of bits as he is getting out of the old truck game.

Somewhere in Saskatchewan.

Here is a snap of the whole caravan.

Note the pile of 'stuff' under the tarp in the back of the truck.

Default A Long Way

It is a long way from Beachville, Ontario to Edmonton, Alberta.

Just shy of 8,000 kilometers. We left Friday after work, and were home the next Monday evening.

Default Languishing

For now, the old truck is sitting behind the garage.

I need to make some room amongst the Universal Carriers to get the old truck into the garage.

There is plenty of powerwashing and minor disassembly to do before the real fun starts.

Default Data Plate

Here is what I know about my old truck:

Picture 9. Data plate on dash. There is also a plate on the back of the box, that is painted over - similiar to ones Hanno has depicted from a Tilbury metalshop.

Default Backgrounder

For the keen eyed observer this will be old news, but I offer it anyway.

This truck has appeared in the magazine some may remember - Bart Vanderveen's Wheels & Tracks - The International Review of Military Vehicles.

Issue No. 26 from 1988, page 5 had a few snaps from the Saskatchewan Army Vehicle Enthusiasts meet at CFB Moose Jaw on 9/10 July. The caption is "Lorne and Jon Swan also own 1942 C15A."

Oddly, if he can be called odd, is another photo submitted by Ed Storey of a Warriors Day parade in CFB Petawawa that depicts a ( younger ) Charlie Fitton and Mark Adams in what I can only assume is Perry Kitsons Universal Carrier. ( I jest, it is probably Malcolm Phillips, although Perry did get his resto hulk from Malcom).

What a small world.

Stewart:

Wow - great find !! Congratulations on getting a very nice C15A and having a 'family' vacation too. You have defined quality time.

Re "What a small world".... it is indeed. The Swans owned the C8A HUP in those CFB Moose Jaw pictures in W&T 5:26 and that is the one that Chris Vicary now has.

Stewart and Mary, well grabbed!

Welcome to the club of 15-cwt owners. Looks like a really good example of the breed, even though it's only a Chev...

Stewart:

Congratulations. Maybe sometime later, your truck can play with mine?

Nice to see that the Unit/Formation signs are 1 Div, HQ Div Sigs.

Would that be a 2J1 box?

So many questions...

I guess your stress level will rise, not being able to decide which MV to take to which show?

If you get bows and canvas, I have an extra set of cross braces.

Jon,

My engine is a bit sick, so it might be a while until I can come out to play.

I was down to the Grand American last weekend and used the opportunity to locate and procure a replacement 216 from a 1948 pickup truck and dragged it home.

I have not figured out where to store a Carrier or 2 while the truck gets torn apart for the tiddying up.

I will try to get up before the snow comes for a visit.

Stew, good on ya!
You are obviuosly suffering a bad case of the RATS (rusty army truck syndrome) Maybe that lady of yours can find you some antidote...
Funny how one turns to two turns to three etc.
Kinda hard to find room for all the toys. Suprising that us veh collectors can find room for an old truck in the garage while the new $50,000 truck sits in the driveway, exposed to the elements.
I think that your next project needs to be the construction of a 30 x 40 ft polebarn or quonset hut!!!

Default Winter Storage

With the Labour Day weekend upon us, my thoughts turn to winter storage of vehicles old and new.

My wife drives the CMP truck into the garage for a bit of a tidying up.

The wife does not need any tidyingup, got to be the best looking CMP driver I have ever seen. Get her out of the garage, and the truck will then love the cover. GRIN.

Seriously a great story and recovery, would have taken longer down here, as maximum speed with a trailer is 100 KPH.

Hope you are going to post some photos, when you are finished.

Regards

Hi Stewart

Great looking frame. What did you and Gord use to strip all the paint off with. Did you sand blast or use some other means.

Default Great job....

Hi Stew

I assume you are working in your new 'Gaw-rage"......

...did you eventually purchase an air compressor????

How about some panning shot from the inside....

Hang in there the end is in site.... or you will buy another one!!!!

Default CMP work.

Gents,

Thanks for your support - I only wish that Canada were not so big so that we could all get together and share some resourses and tricks. I am new to this, so I like to do things the hard way first.

For the initial paint stripping I used my 3/8" drill with a wire wheel on it. I thought that it was doing a great job until Gord showed me his 7" grinder with knotted wire rope attachment. It works just as well as sand blasting to get right down to the wood! I am doing all of this in the small garage as the big one is not heated. Confining the dust to a small area actually makes cleaning up easier ( although the wife would argue that I have not really cleaned up that much!).

Ken - in Ontario we use too much salt on the roads to find any good stuff near me. I would rather shave with a cheesegrater than do bodywork, so the 8,000 km. that I went to fetch this one from the Canadian West was time well spent, I would say.

Bob - I got a 5hp Coleman compressor with my air miles at Crappy Tire- just a toy by your standards, but enough to paint and inflate with for now. The air wrench makes short work of the big wheel nuts, but I still have to remember that the threads on the half the studs are backwards.

Rob - as this the truck goes back together I will find something to swipe from you - don't worry .

I will try to remember to keep the camera handy to record some of the details for posterity.

Default Tell us about.....

...that 216 water pump and the Hay-dapter you used....

How many holes did you drill into the block...?? and how easy was it to tap the holes for bolts...??? what about waterpump pulley speed with 261 damper......?? was the belt groove matching between size of 216 and damper pulley of 261...?

any idea how much space.... in inches.... you saved over the stock 261 waterpump.....

Wonder where Phil is with his 261 waterpump..... youhou!!

Bub, Rub and Grub will be facing the same dilemma soon.

Bub
