Years ago, I was mad keen on trout fishing . The local library was where I found a few books written by David Scholes . He is the eminent author on the topic here in Aust. I met him back in 1975, he was no let down, he was just as I'd imagined he would be . He hardly mentioned his WW2 service in his many books . -

Going through the naa.gov.auv on line archives, they have his RAAF RECORDS , over 50 pages of it ! A DFC winner at 21 , and 30 sorties flying Lancasters from Skellingthorpe with 61 squadron .

Here is single page from his records . The sad words on the memorial at Skellingthorpe hit home .

Default Like so many quiet heros

Mike - Thanks for sharing that glimpse into our fathers generation (what ever generation that may be) quiet men and women who serve their country with distinction and valor. Then return home and pickup their lives and go on.

Keith,

Sadly, he passed away a couple of years ago. I read his early books aged 13 . I used to take them to school and read them during spare periods . The early books are absolute classics , now worth quite a tidy sum.

If you google his name you will get many hits .

He had a very friendy nature , always liked to chat . He was a noted artist too, his paintings of riparian scenes always sold quickly . He moved to Tasmania just after the war , back to where he had done did his initial piloting traning at Western Junction ( Launceston) .

Mmm, if he was still involved in aviation a mate of mine at the aero club would have probably known him.
