Default Dieppe Raid Jeep

It’s not to often one is able to have multiple pictures of the same vehicle let alone a written description and drawings as well for the modification done. Considering 4 pictures were taken by the Germans. Car 5cwt, with WD-4218884 was a Canadian contract CDLV242 slat grill Willys Jeep. This was one of 4-6 Jeeps sent by 2nd Canadian Infantry Division for use as “Blitz Buggy’s” on the Dieppe Raid. The intended use of CM-4218884 was to haul explosives for use by the RCE units on the raid. Major Sucharov was tasked with conducting numerous landings methods and ways for vehicles to traverse different beach’s and sea walls. The Blitz Buggy was put through a number of landings and under a various loads of both equipment and men. One modification that was made was the creation of an equipment holding bracket for mounting on the hood.

Some more pictures of the Jeep.

The last picture is from landing trials that Major Sucharov conducted in June 1942. There were a lot of trials conducted trying to figure out how to get vehicles off the landing craft, across the beach and over a sea wall. The ramps the Jeep is climbing were the 12’ vehicle ramps seen later in 1944 on some Staghounds.

These Jeeps I’m still trying to track down. I believe they may have been the three other Jeeps taken on the raid but not landed. Mention is made that 4-6 Jeeps were sent from 2nd Canadian Infantry Division for the Dieppe Raid. These Jeeps do show up in the landing trials done in the summer of 1942. They all appear to CDLV242 contract Jeeps. There also appears to be racking added to both the front and rear of the jeep. In the one picture of a jeep leaving a landing craft, there appears to be a Churchill tank intake shroud in the back.

Great piece of research, Jordan. Very interesting to read! Hope someone recreates this Jeep, either in 1:1 or 1:35 scale
