Picked this up last week. 45degrees in the shade, only there wasn't any shade.
Built in the Victorian Railways Newport Workshops. 1942 No.2250 Was purchased aftere the war by a gliding club who removes the radiator, engine, gearbox and diff to use as a winch for the gliders. The rest is very complete with the air cleaner covers still in the back. The origonal horn button is in situ. Ammo box holders are mostly there, and the tracks as well. So we need an engine, gearbox, diff and gearbox linkage bits. Fuel tanks are missing and so is the horn.(and lots of other little bits.) It's mate, the owner wants to do one day.

Easy to load if you've got the gear.

Ron,
I live on the south side of the Great Australian Alps. The 2 of the carriers I've bought home have come from the other side. There are 4 ways to here from over there and only the road through Melbourne is the flatest one. Not that flat either. Over Mt. Hotham there is a steep 33km. climb up through the Victorian snow fields. 269 definate corners in that 33 km. Not the trip with a carrier on behind. We came home with the previous one over Sassafras Gap between Coryyong and Benambra to Omeo. A much more gently solid climb of about 10km with 66km. of gravel. The trip was a slow one of about 7 hours. This trip I decided to come down the Hume Hwy. via Melbourne. This was a 91/2 hour trip. Total distance home to home was 1136km. I was a bit overloaded. My 3 axle trailer is rated at 4 tonnes capacity, and weighs 980kg. The tow vehicle is a SSangyong Musso 2.9lt 5 cylinder turbo diesel. I averaged 15mpg for the trip home. The Musso towed well with a steady 80 to 90km per hour maintained. This was on the flat and down to 60km. on 2 or 3 hills. The Musso has ABS, Traction Control, ESP and electric brakes on the trailer. Slow and steady is the way to go. If your slow up hill, go slow down hill. You need to have a story ready for the Long Arm of the Law, should you be picked up. Rgards Rick

Hi Rick,
Thanks for the reply to my questions, I normaly go out west for about 1400 Ks to pick up my bits and pieces, its mostly flat driving, but there are a couple of really steep hills, I drop down into 4 wheel drive and use second gear, its slow but there is an even chance that I will get down in one piece, I guess the old saying that you dont have to be stupid, but it helps fits me to a glove, but it sure beats the s..t out of staring at the tv watching the days go by, thanks for sharing your news, Regards Ron

A good save Euan,
I (and a good many others) have known of those two carriers for many years, Ian was always after a guiberson radial as a trade for them but there arent many guibersons around. He used to have two ex Centurion engines in the crates for sale once... I had some pics of them taken about 1996 if you are interested but it will take a while to find them. Cheers and good luck with the restoration Phill

Yes well I must admit I do miss my cent at times - Big fun Big money to run and Big maintenance and repair bills. It went to a very good home at Mat's though.
Cheers Phill
