Default lucas headlight glass

Does anybody know where I can look for glass for my Lucas headlight.I found this one on an old carrier in the swamp(only 1 bullet hole in it) but the other headlight was a standard Mk 1 headlight.I would eventually like to find another one and mount them on my carrier. When did they use the lucas headlight on carriers until they switched and started using the regular ones? Thanks,Derk.

Looks to me as if it is the CAV logo on top .
They usually had a plain lens with structure on the inside , If you need I can take a picture of one . That glas is still available in holland , you just have to cut it round.
the Lucas version usually had a ribbed lens in it.

Default Headlight info.

Hi Maurice,
Yes the logo has a steering wheel with CAV inside the top section and below is BRITISH MADE.On the outside of the steering wheel emblem on top looks like the top of a Flaming torch and at the bottom of the steering wheel I am not sure what the stamping is supposed to represent.Maybe the bottom of the flaming torch?

Paul,
Thanks for the lead.I will contact him about the glass lens.I hope I can find another headlight assembly but will order 2 glass lens to have just in case.
Thanks for the help,Derk.

Hi, Does anyone happen to know were you can get the headlight cover which go's over the front with a single central hole in the front as seen usually on the right hand headlight of a carrier, also the other shielded cover which go's on the left?.

thanks.

Kevin,
Here is a part of a e mail that I recieved from Brian Asbury, recently. At present, he is on vacation. He should be back in a couple of weeks. Hope that this helps.

Default glass diameter

Richard,
I measure 8 1/4 inches across. The glass panel must be thick as there is approximately 1/4 inch gap between the ring and inner dome.
I was told once that the lens could possibly fit from an automobile. Thanks for your help.
Derk.

This is what you are looking for. Lucas and CAV are the same shells with a different badge. This is the standard glass. They are easy to spot at swapmeets, by the flats on the sides.

Default Lucas glass

Thanks Lynn,
I don't ever remember glass lenses like that here in Manitoba at any of the flea markets or junk shops but at least now I know what I am looking for.Maybe Richard can help me out when he can check in his attic or I will contact the lead that Paul has listed.I am in no rush for one but would like to complete it at some point.I will still have to find another headlight before I put them on my carrier.
Regards,Derk.

Derk

Always look for more than one of carrier parts please - mine is pretty bare bones.

Jeff

PS have you dug to your garage yet? Where's the GPW hiding?

Default carrier headlights

Hi, Can anyone confirm please if the canadian built Mk1 carrier, 1943 mortar carrier would of been fitted with the Lucas/CAV style headlights?, Whenever I look at a carrier I first look at the headlights to see if it is British or Canadian built as a first spot. But correct me if I am wrong the Canadian illustrated parts manual FUC-03 has both lights featured, The standard type with the flat backs and the CAV/Lucas type, could I put the CAV type on a Canadian carrier?. If correct then I have been looking at alot of carrier pics thinking they were British but really Canadian?.
help?

If you check the Cdn parts manual I believe it will give the cut-off serial number for the Lucas headlamps. It was fairly early in production that the Lucas headlamps were replaced by the Cdn style headlamps, and it would have been common to replace the oddball lucas assy with the Cdn standard lamp as a replacement part once the vehicle was in service.

I don't have my manual available right now, but the change to Cdn lamps would have been in the first few thousand carriers, if even that many. All 1943 carriers would have had the Cdn lamps, as would most 1942 carriers.

Default Lucas headlight

Kevin,
I removed this Lucas headlight from a carrier in northern Manitoba some years back and by the picture you can see what Rob was talking about, the headlight on the right is a Canadian style and the left is the Lucas style.I would imagine that if it was mounted on the carrier that it would be original to it.I can't see using the Lucas headlight style as a replacement for a Canadian style.Unfortunately there is no way of identifying what serial number range this carrier was built as all the armour is cut off but (correct me if I am wrong) is a Canadian built Mk 1 design.
I also was looking in my manual and found the diagram showing the 2 types of headlight designs but found no reference to when the changeover took place.Anyone else have an idea?

Derk.
