Default help needed with 44 WC51

hi everyone i have a 44 WC51 that has engine problems.it mostly concerns misfiring at speed.going up hill in 3rd or 4th gears, sometimes even in 2nd on flat ground.i have tried to fix it myself, replaced the coil, drained the fuel filter, points, condensor, dizzy cap and spark plugs.when all this failed,i took the truck to a mechanic friend,as i do not have the various tools or space to tear an engine apart.he has worked on it,overhauled the carberator, and thought he had it fixed, engine has more power but still misfires, backfires under load.he is stumped,i mentioned to him that maybe someone here could help with info.anyone out there with 6 cyl flathead experience? if so pm me and perhaps someone could call him. truck has been at his shop for 7 weeks now, hope to have her running before the muster in aug. thanks for any help. Rob

Default Where oh where in Ontario....?

Hi Rob

We could go on with a long list of questions of what has been or not been done.......

There are only three things that makes it run..... gas, spark and air.... in proper mixture and at the right time.

You seem to indicate that some improvements were noticed after rebuilding the carburator....... could have been a low fuel or lean condition...... but if you are saying that it misfires/backfires under load....such as accelerating in 2nd and more in 3rd and fourth it may a timing issue.....but would not discount lack of fuel being pumped in the engine.

what engine size do you have..? was a compression test done..? if a timing check is done and results are erratic it could be a timing chain problem...

I believe you have a non water proof dizzy and should have a vacuum advance..... is it working properly..?

Have you tried blowing your fuel line clean from back of tank to engine..?

Depending on your geo-location you may be able to track down an old flat head mechanics...... Farm tractor shops such as M-F used Chrysler flat head on farm equipment......

...or drive it to the barn......

hello, thanks for the replies. i just got a call from my buddy mechanic,he says she is running fine now. he will explain in more detail to me what was wrong.it was a series of problems, but lastly the coil was not functioning properly. timing was checked before, compression was done and two cylinders were way below proper compression.these problems were fixed, and the fuel pump was tested confirming that the carb was getting fuel.i will get more info, but it seems to be ok now.....knock wood. the hour long drive from his place to mine ought to be a good test drive.
