Hi Obby
The chassis number should be near the left front spring hanger facing out . This should have a series of numbers followed by a letter which may indicate what state it was assembled in . Looking at picture 2 there is a holder for a military fire extinguisher , the dash indicates it may be early forties where as the chev's assembled late in the war and in 46 had the military dash with round individual gauges. Regards Jim S.

It appears to be a 1941/42 but for the model you need to measure the wheelbase as there is only an inch difference between several models.

1941 was the first year Chev put the headlights on the top of the fenders like that. Earlier trucks had them mounted to the sides of the radiator tin. In 1942 they quit using chrome on stuff since it was required for more important things so yours should be a 1941 model.

Centre of front hub to centre of rear axle 115" , could not see the chassis number will have to scrape all the grease off the chassis in that area , do you know if it is possible to buy a workshop manual for these old Chev,s.
Will have a go at firing the engine up this arvo cheer |

I think your truck is a 1942, Model BE, Commercial half ton truck. The park lights on the top of the headlights were different for the 1941, Model AK, commercial half ton truck.

http://cas.awm.gov.au/item/025161 The light Stone colour on the tag indicates for military use . The wheelbase will be 115" or thereabouts. The next size up is the 1 tonner on 17" wheels with 123" wheelbase . Interesting find . I just realised " C1 " indicates MARCH 1941 assembly making it a very early example, possibly one of the very first Holden did with the 41 style front end . D L X indicates DULUX paint . MIKE BTW obby , a guy in QLD sent me some pics of his vehicle . same as yours, but with the original ute body on it .... wooden frame with panels attached. My 40 model utes had the same body ..im still looking for info/plans

Being a Canadian / Australian vehicle this would most likely be a model 13 , 15cwt with 16'' wheels where as the 1 ton model 14 had 17'' wheels .
Certainly a good find and well worth restoring to original. Regards Jim S.

Thanks for all the assistance in identifing this old girl. I tried to start it last weekend but the starter motor is faulty so i jammed the old crank handle in , tipped some fuel down the carby and give it a swing. All i managed to do was bruise my elbow as it backfired. My old mate in the photo thought it was a great joke and wouldnt stop laughing. In reality it bloody hurt , i have pulled the starter out and dropped it down to an auto electrician to repair.
I find myself sitting in my office day dreaming about how it must have looked when it was brand new and what the first owner was thinking when he took delivery and how i would love to get it back to that condition. Hope this passes soon as i am not getting much done, In reality its a big challenge for me as i have 3 kids who are all good at sport and a job that takes me all over Western Qld so i am away from home on a regular basis.and i already have 3 older cars in the shed. For now i will get it running so i can move it around, give it a good spray with fish oil and keep it under cover. Once i have found the chassis numbers i will post along with a youtube link so you can see it running. cheers Obby |

Have been unable to locate the chassis number best i can do is a 50c piece size circle with an S stamped sideways into it on the left front chassis behind the wheel , the engine number is R581935.
i have posted another photo of a bracket behind the cab and if you look below the rear window you can just see another clip of some sort , any idea what this may have been for. Cheers Shaun Last edited by obby; 07-05-10 at 10:36. Reason: add photo |

Am chasing a starter motor for my 1940 41 Chev 6cyl 215 engine i think. Old one is to costly to repair and it has the starter cast bracket broken as well. Also need a carbie kit for the standard Carter Carbie. Who could i contact that may have parts.

G'day Shaun,
Been through this recently, Kits for W1's are available from this bloke http://www.classiccarbs.com.au/ Not sure how familiar you are with the W1 but heres a couple of things I learned after rebuilding one. Be very patient with the brass slotted head fittings you'll have to remove to get into the circuits and ports. If you burr them (badly) they will prob never come off. In which case a lot of Carbie cleaner & compressed air will have to do. The kits (off this guy) come with only the accelerator port brass fitting but it does have all the gaskets you will need and an accelerator pump. Two suggestions...... hunt around for a siezed or broken W1 - and get out any of the brass fittings you can. Heat the carbie with an oxy then squirt the WD40 on the fittings - should free them up before you attack them with a screwdriver. Might be telling you how to suck eggs - hope it goes smoothly
