Default Ford 375 type steering

I'm in the process of rebuilding a steering box for Swiss Chris and wondered what experience people have had with these steering boxes.
Essentially I think they were a bit light for the job, and coupled with inadequate lubrication it is hard to find a good steering box these days.

The one I originally had in it was hard to turn, so I replaced it with another which seemed to be OK but has a bit of play. I am going to try to adjust the sector shaft but as mentioned earlier am doing a rebuild on a spare to send with the vehicle.

Today I disassembled the hard to turn one and found the steering shaft taper roller bearings were both pitted, as was the sector shaft and steering shaft worm. Max has provided both a good sector shaft and a NOS steering shaft as well as a pair of the rollers, so I'll have to find a pair of cups (perhaps on another box).

Has anyone here had any experience taking backlash out of the sector shaft with the adjustment on the side?

Has anyone completely rebuilt one before? Is there a supplier for new sector shafts?

Is this steering box (or parts thereof) common to other Ford vehicles?

To answer some of my own questions I'm looking at the Macs Auto catalogue which seems to have all the required parts - just need to see whether they are the correct ones for a CMP. Here's a link.

Default Steering box parts

Hi Keith,
Ross Prince had some used boxes and also parts at one stage.
I got the parts for my Chev from him some time ago.
Probably worth a phone call.

Default Ford 375 steering box

Hi Keith,
I rebuit the steering box on my F 30. The biggest problem was with the needle rollers in the sector shaft worm.
In all the boxes I came across they had collapsed and broken up inside where they cant be seen unless the worm is separated from the shaft.
I found the civilian truck parts were not as heavy as the CMP ones but it looks like Macs have the correct worm bearings listed.
If you don't have a Ford CMP parts book I can scan the relevant pages for you if that would help to check them out.
Cheers,
Terry
