In a fit of organization I was looking over my various M38A1 Cdn 2 and 3Jeep wheels, trying to differentiate between the civilian pattern and military pattern ones, until I found the exception to the rule. Which prompted me to go back to reconfirm my previous identification.
Instead of two types of 1/4 ton wheel, I have three types. First type - I'm calling it Military: smooth domed centre, valve stem aligns with a lug hole; Second type - I'm calling it Civilian: slightly stepped centre with a distinct flattening about 1/2" from the joint with the outer rim, valve stem not aligned with a lug hole; Third type - the peculiar one: two small welded bars on opposite sides of centre near the lug holes (maybe a primitive wheel balancing attempt?), valve stem not aligned, and centre and rim rivetted together. The rivets and heads protrude and are easy to find by touch. The other two types are machine welded without physical couplings. This particular wheel is heavily overpainted with red and black paint, so I suspect it is a civilian CJ part. Question - do I have a combination of M38, M38A1 Cdn 1, 2 and 3, and civilian Willys wheels? Or something even more esoteric? TW ![]()
