Default CMP photos published

HERITAGE COMMERCIALS magazine, April 2004 issue has some of my Ford CMP photos at the assembly/repair depot at Lep in Goole, England in an article I wrote. There are also some Dodge, Diamond T, and Ford trucks, a jeep, and trailers. The photos you have however seen before in some cases on this site though the text you will not have. Please excuse the error in the caption regarding the Ford CMPs...they are # 12 cabs. However someone will tell me what the Ford chassis-cab is...F60S?

Default Ford Cab-chassis..

.... Is an F60L. The longer wheelbase is indicated by the fact that you can't see the rear right tyre due to the length, and the driveshaft coming up to the pillow block well behind the cab.

Who does your proof reading? You, David, are referred to as David HAYWOOD and HAYWARD. Hope the professor gets your name correct on the royalty cheque: : .

Default What cheque????

G'day Tony! What cheque? It's all written for love not money, and to preserve my sanity. Also, Alan only works as a Contributing Editor for HC magazine...different publishers [Mortons Heritage Media] from the books thank goodness. Blame Mortons!

Thanks very much indeed for the i.d. of the chassis. The Ambulance Office Type 4 stretcher Articised Cat 235 front truck is # A 5827455 and the one exiting left by the pub on the corner is # A 5827457, so must have been the third truck on the line! But wait... A 5827461 towards the back of the line is the subject of an official photograph..Imperial War Museum KID 1724.

Any ideas what the chassis are on the right hand assembly line with the chevron tyres please?

Default Other pictures?

Where are these other trucks pictured, David? I only see one pic in the sample of your article, that of a workshop with two F60L's with Ford V8 and Jeep motors on the ground:

Tony, I thought that they had put the pic on the website, though they did the #12 Cab ones. The photo is published in the mag but here is an extract of the original photo:

That Ford chassis with No.13 cab? Lets's see: single rear springs, 10.50-16" tyres ... looks like an F30 30-cwt truck to me.

The F30 was superceded by the F60S which had the same wheelbase, but heavier springs, axles and 20" wheels.

Thumbs up F30

Hanno, agree with you, F30.
Try for a date anyone?,

I'll say it's early spring 1943,

I think you're safe David from being accused of doctoring prints, unlike my good self who took some unmerciful ribbing when I shared that last lot of photos with you all.

Pete

It could be 1943...it's definitely later than 1942.

David the thing that points me towards the picture being early1943 and the truck late 1942 production are as follows:

Small holes in the bumper edges, the sequence for these goes as follows, early and mid 11's no holes, very late 11's and all 12's large holes, early 13's large holes, mid range 13's small holes, late 13's no holes.

Absence of roof hatch: 11's none 12cab field mods have been seen fitted with a square field mod roof hatch, early 12 cabs no hatch mid and late range 12's square hatch as factory standard
Early 13's factory fitted square hatch (but not all models, agent 'O's C30 1942 LAA hasn't got one for example. Mid range 13's nothing, late 13's round roof hatch.

The fact that it's a 30cwt would point to it being early in the 13 production run, 30's were limited standard and then phased out of production.

The two blokes (and before any one says it they are not Steve and me again) are in winter coats and there is very little shadow tone in the picture suggesting a weak low sun.

There you go guys tell me I'm wrong

Pete

Default Hatch up your troubles

I would guess spring or winter 1943. The F60L chassis were to S/M 6043 which must have been a 1943 delivery at least. That said some of the shots are of Diamond T 980/981 tractor units with open top cab that came in in August 1943. I would therefore suggest winter 1943? I can date it further because the last C30 that I know of was manufactured October 18 1943 to S/M 6051.
Whilst on that point, I just noticed that officially the S/M 6051 trucks were as follows:
L 5584483 to 5585063 SM 6051 LORRY 3 TON 4 X 4 WIRELESS (HOUSE) as per IWM PHOTO KID 3042. However actual trucks show that they were definitely C30 trucks! The last known C39 chassis were:
L 6178634 to 6178673 SM 6447 LORRY 30 CWT. 4 X 4 TELEPHONE CONSTRUCTION AND MAINT.
These must have been assembled in 1944 I suggest.

As to Ford F30 British orders they were sparse! These were the last known candidates, otherwise the chassis-cab in the photo was a Canadian order:
H 5327001 to 5327600 SM 2487 Tractor 4x4 Lt AA
IWM PHOTO KID 1968 C29QF F30 A/A VARIANT was the last known one but perhaps this was a F30:
L 6189700 to 6189705 SM 60? Lorry 3 ton 4x4 Derrick which I had believed was a F60S in absence of any other evidence

With all due respect, all I could thing of was "Monty Python" in looking at the two chaps in the photo.

Sorry.

Default Swawk!

I went my my brother and a friend to the MP stage show at The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London...some of the guys in the audience looked wierder than the cast. Also, all the four-letter words that you could not possibly say on tv/film were in the stage show including in the Parrot Sketch. Brilliant!

Default Which picture are we talking about again??

The only picture I saw was the one in the story provided by the link given by David, this picture below. The two trucks (Ford cab-chassis) are long wheel base, with a helper spring on the rear springs, which I ID as F60L.
Yes, the second pic is of an F30.

Default CMP ambulances

The May 2004 issue of Heritage Commercials magazine has a letter from Mr Richard Farrant that I had added together with another sent direct about QLs, plus three photos of CMP Ambulances. One is a GM of Canada C60L shot, and the others a C60L and F60L...the latter being one in the assembly line at Lep, Goole in the April issue! Yes, same truck, different occasion, hundreds of clicks away! Talk about coincidence!
