Default Ford v8 Gen set

Found a generator trailer on a local farm but have been unable to identify make or origin. Were it differs from others I have seen is the Ford V8 runs alongside the generator and the generator is belt driven. It looks like 240volts. Looking for any info.

Euan,

Gen sets in Aust are a minor nightmare: various voltages and applications, some dual voltage, some DC rather than AC, etc. But if you provide some close-ups of the plates on the control panel, and an overall image or two showing the wheels (size and stud pattern) I may be able to narrow it down.

Is there an engine number on the V8? If so, what 'type' (XGXXXXXF or BB18FXXXXX etc). All this info would help in the process.

Regards

Mike C

Default Gen set

Tony, That looks like we have a match, although I think this one is 22 not 18.
Mike, your right I will provide more detail in future. It was a little rushed and hard to photograph in the shed its in.
I did note it had an engine reco at some point. Will get more details if I can secure it.

Another interesting item for the 'Year of the Trailed Equiptment' for Corowa Swim-In next year. Tow it behind the carrier, Euan!

Default towed stuff

Yes Rick, small problem with tow vehicles as I would love to bring wiles cooker, carrier on trailer, Cario cargo trailer, jeep trailer 3@4, blitz semi, CGT with limber and 25 and now maybe a gen set.
May need to do a trailer train?

OK: that interesting piece of information about the KW gives it away I think: the Brit sets were 18KW, 100 Volt DC, while the Aust sets were 22KW as below:

-'Trailers 2 wheel, Petrol Electric Generator (Aust) No.2 was used to house searchlight generator (Aust) No.1 (100 Volts DC, 22KW and on 9:00x18 tyres)
-'Trailers 2 wheel, Petrol Electric Generator (Aust), No.2A' was used to house the searchlight PE 22KW, 100 Volt DC (Aust) No.2 or 2A gen set. Tyres were 9:00x18.
-'Trailers 2 wheel, Petrol Electric Generator (Aust), No.5A' was used to house the searchlight PE 22KW, 100 Volt DC (Aust) No.2 or 2A gen set. Tyres were 9:00x18.

There are differences between the construction of the three trailers, but both the 2A and 5A trailers house the same gen set. The plates will make interesting reading if you can get an image or two.

Euan,

Didn't you locate a 240 volt gen set recently as well? I think Keith may have asked me for some info. That one would be better than a 100 Volt DC set anyday!

Then is it '25KVA' rather than '22KW', and its AC not DC?

Haven't found a '22' output connected with a 240 Volt AC gen set in any of the Aust listings (but that's not to say I have found them all, of course!! As I said earlier, the Aust Gen sets are a bit of a nightmare to tie down).

Mine is an 85hp, 221ci, 3 1/16" bore, 21 stud engine and has an engine number *B18F5807218*. It is curious in having the 5 pointed stars at the beginning and end of the number, which I have not seen on any other Ford V8 engine number. Also the stamp used for the 8's is truncated across the top, weird?

These engines have a Magneto igition, using a Lucas 8WRSF Magneto. There is a seller in NZ who often lists a mag for sale on both TradeMe and Ebay, but as soon as you say Magneto and Flathead together, they seem to think "Rare-High Preformance-Racing" and the price goes stratospheric. They are a basic magneto with no advance and designed to run with a governor. They would be useless on a high preformance Hotrod, let alone ordinary automotive use!

Different unit, that's the inline, skid mounted version. Euan's interest is in the side-by-side trailer unit.
