Default M38A1 CDN Transfer Case - Versions??

I'm pulling a post military life installed Warn Overdrive off my M38A1 CDN2 and need to confirm which transfer case was used before I order a few parts as there were 3 variations of the Dana 18.
My RCEME Parts List & Scales seem to indicate that the same part numbers were used for a number of TC components on the M38 CDN, M38A1 CDN, and CDN2. My TC has a 1.125" Intermediate Shaft unlike the other variants which are 1.25" for the 1967 model year.

Was the same version of the DANA 18 TC (1.125" Inter. Shaft) used on all our CDN's thru the years or could my unit have had an older TC swapped into it?

Thanks,
James Gilbert

Hi James,

Welcome to the forum.

The only one used from the factory that I know of is the 1 1/4" version.

Perhaps others will chime in but I supect the answer you will get is that anything may have been swapped in over the years from military or civilian life but a 1 1/8" shaft is not the common version.

Are you measuring the shaft here? (The shaft in the picture is 1 1/8")

A good source for info on Dana 18's is at novak conversions website: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/model_18.htm

If you have any questions specific to your jeep I may be able to help as I currently have CFR 67-07809 from CFB Chilliwack and I live near there.

P.S. Contact me via PM if you are interested in obtaining (trades are best) another Dana 18 that was pulled from my other '67 CDN2.

Default overdrive removal

The INTERMEDIAT SHAFT SIZE, only increased for strength. I think gear size and tooth no. is the same. Regardless, pull OD unit replace original or appropreat input gear with washer and nut. Replace gasket and cover. Bobs your uncle. Ps, A good OD is worth at least $700
I have one on my M38A1 CDN 2 and wouldn't change it for the world..This jeep runs effortllessy
a t 45 - 50 in 3rd gear.
CheersBob

PS This jeep could be for sale. Many pictures of resto. Not cheap. PM me.
