I am just renewing my front brakes on an M818 Tractor unit at the moment and was wondering whether the front uses the outer oil seal flange that stops the oil from coming through the axle housing. There was not one fitted, but should there be?, also behind the inner hub seal, is there a retaining ring that bolts on the hub to retain this seal against the inner hub bearing, the reason I ask this is that there is a ring of bolt holes around this inner hub, but for what purpose, they are drilled and tapped? Can someone enlighten me??,Thanks.

The bolt holes are there to allow the hubs to be flipped around if used for dual wheels...ie the rear position. At least that is the case on the M35 family which uses the same rockwell axles except smaller.
It has been a few years since I worked on the 5 ton family, but if memory serves there will be the seal and retainer inside the tube. You have to pull the axle shaft to get to it. There should not be oil in the knuckle, although there always is a rich soup of oil and grease. As such, there is no outer hub seal wiper installed as it would serve no purpose. |

If you need those seal/Retainers I have a few of them

Thanks guys, it makes sense now. The inner hub seal I have for the job , has a stepped shoulder that fits against the bearing, and did not have a retainer used, so is this retainer used if you use a standard flat oil seal ?

The seal I illustrated is the seal and retainer that are in the axle tube to prevent oil from getting to the knuckle, and thus also preventing the differential oil from getting through the spindle and to the bearings. There is no retainer involved with the hub.
