Perhaps you should be on the Canadian Gun Nutz forum not here for that one?

The market is strong for Garands. Expect to pay $1000 for a bad one and up to $2000 for a premium. There are two groups of receivers in Canada - Danish marked Italian Breda and Beretta made rifles, and USGI. The Winchesters go for more because of name brand recognition. The Italian ones are underrated in my opinion.
Fair warning. This year a big name gun company in Eastern Ontario was all over the gun sites in Canada advertising 7.62 Italian conversions for about $1750. They made a big deal about "finding a limited quantity" of these guns. Well, the story was better than reality. It turns out they were made from pieces and put together very badly. As soon as buyers received their guns, the noises began and they were sending them back for refunds. The major gun website threw them off/accepted their retirement. So, send me a private message if you don't know who I mean, but I won't spread negative identification on an open forum. Edit - the picture shows three thicknesses of brass shim stock between the receiver rail and the right lug of the bolt, with the operating rod removed. There should never be any space behind locked lugs.

As an " old guy" I was spoiled in my youth by the many varieties of surplus rifles available very cheaply. Lee Enfields were $29 at Sears, my local sports store had clean mausers for years at for $50-60 and I remember a Johnson self loading rifle for sale for $125 - which I regret to this day I didnt purchase.
So a reminder that just several years ago there was a temporary influx of cheap US made Garands- I bought one in London Ont for $150 after running a brush through several rifles and buying the one with the best bore. They were supposed to be from a shipment turned back at the US border as they origin ated from Vietnam. Dont know whether the story is true - but you might get one for a good price with a kijiji ad or some such. Mine is Springfield and shoots great! |
