Hi everyone.
Im about to get back my completely rebuilt radiator for my carrier sometime this week and I have a question about how much fluid and what kind to put in. The gentleman who is doing the rebuild suggested that I put in about 60% anti-freeze and 40% water and keep that in the system over the winter instead of draing to reduce rusting. Does this sound right and what would be the best brand to use. Sincerely Jordan Baker |

How cold does it get where you are?
60/40 is good down to -60F(-51C). 70/30 is maximum, more anti-freeze than that actually starts raising the protection temperature. Pictures are always nice! Roger in Vegas

Jordan, 60/40 sounds about right, you'll be OK here in S ontario.
Any decent brand will do, Prestone, Peak, etc etc. |

Roger and Chris,
Thanks for the help. Here are some pics of my radiator before it blew and gave me a great steam bath. I now know how lobsters feel! I'll post some photos of it when I get it back and its all new. |

Hi Jordan
Just as a word of caution, don't use Dexcool (the red stuff). It is the latest and greatest so lots of folks want to use it. It is not worth the extra money, especially in a vehicle not using it as OEM. It may be more environmentally friendly but its too much trouble. As Chris says most brands of the green stuff are equally good with the exception of the CTC cheapo crap. It is on a par with the toilet antifreeze you use in an RV. Good Luck Barry C |

I got my new rad the other day and it sure looks good. All the seems have been completely redone and almost all of the dents removed from the tank. Even the big patches of solder on the top of the tank are gone. Now I just need to get some paint mixed up in the appropriate shade of green and paints the tanks and frame. The rad core is already black and I think I will leave that way. Any particular brand of paint or am I ok with any heat resistant paint brand?
Ive taken some pictures but I first need to finsh the role of film and they will be posted asap. Thanks agian for all the help. Jordan Baker |
