I like to keep busy, Max.
But yes, it might be right for Tony but it's not for sale... There is, however a nice Chev cab 12 C60L which will be.

No, it had gone with the side of the engine cover.

Default And the cab 12

Howard, who used to drive it commented because it had no brakes, he used the handbrake and would sometimes grab a handfull of plug leads instead with highly amusing results!

Underneath the peeling paint is the original light stone colour which indicates Western Desert service.

More here.

Default Auction getting closer...

There have been some new pics posted on the site... Howard, the guy running the auction was wondering whether anyone can identify these wheelbraces...

Default Some more things to I.D.

First, these oil coolers. Are they from carriers?

This tool is also unknown to me:

The pics come from here.

Also these hub bits:

Those oil coolers sure look like ones from carriers. Ive never seen them before with the burlap wrapping. Perhaps that was for storage?

The other bits I have no idea

Thanks, Jordan

I think the fact they're packaged like that means they're probably NOS.

Question

G'Day all, this is my first post at MLU.
I am the guy with the shedfull auction on the 29th. Keith has been a fantastic help in identifying many items we have unearthed, but a few of the last ones have him stumped. (Eg above).
I want to find out what MLU users know about alloy heads for sidevalve V8's. I have a couple of heads in two different styles. Any info?
And who is coming to the auction?
Thanks.

Default That head

G'day Howard

The one in the pic here would be from an early sidevalve V8 - the one where the water pumps were on the heads, of the mid-1930s.

Good to see you posting here, and we look forward to pics of your interesting future restoration!

Default Carrier Oil Cooler

Hi Keefy
I don't think they are Carrier. Carrier coolers consist of a double pipe set-up held together with clamps. See image. They are also D shaped. The inlet and outlet pipes are also curved to where they attach onto the oil lines. Still you never know, a bit hard to pick from the pic.

PS - received the DMV Book, excellent. I'll contact Kate re. payment.

Bob

Default ID found for this one

According to Bruce Peelgrane, this is a strap from a Mustard Gas container. Just as well you were wearing your gloves!

Yikes! I think I'll get the Mrs to handle those straps from now on! The box of gear above has been identitied as wet clutches used in auto transmissions or hydraulic differentials (like a tractor). Boring and disapointing!
Don't worry Keith we'll stump 'em yet!
Howard.

The Alloy head pictured is for a 1932-36 21 stud Ford V8(RH head). LH head has the water pump mount in a mirror image position. The two versions you may have of this head are for flat top pistons and domed pistons.
Unfortunately, they won't fit Blitzes, but someone with a British 21 stud Carrier engine might like to polish them up.

Hey, have you chaps got a stock of Mustard Gas ?

If I sent you a component with the yellow gas detector paint on it, could you check and see what colour it goes ?

I dripped some bleach on it and thought about peeing on it (DIY chlorine) but it didn't react to that.

Rich.

Post Alloy Heads

G'day Tony,
Thanks for the info. Atached is pic of 2nd style head looks a bit more familiar in design. Do you know why alloy heads were discontinued? What is the advantage/disadvantage of fitting there? (Other than being shiny)

The second style you have shown is for a 24 stud Blitz style motor. I don't believe any of these were produced during the war, and were most often found on post-war trucks. They were used with thicker castings to improving coolant flow and sometimes had a smaller combustion chamber volume to raise compression to give 100hp on post-war V8s. Most often found on Truck motors rather than car engines, the ones that do show up usually have a part number C7RT- 6049 or C7RT-6050 indicating 1947 truck. Unfortunately, while popular duing the late 40s and 50s (leading to the aftermarket introducing them as speed equipment), the alloy tends to corrode in the water jacket, and they are prone to cracking and stripping spark plug threads.

Howard, the item you have identified as a "Blitz Wynch", is actually looks more like a 2 ton Dawn winch that was used on Jeeps in WW2.

I cannot tell you how amazed I am at what people know...
It seems that someone, somewhere, knows everything about something. MLU has been the greatest help! I can see myself becoming a long-time member & calling often for help as I set about getting the old Cab 12 F15 back on the road.
Can't wait to post some more 'mystery' items after the weekend... MLU is the best!
