bought as an Iltis attachment, but never used as I never took the jeep offroad . strictly a fair weather, fair road pleasure vehicle. In fact, the kit has only been out of the bag a couple of times, when first bought and for photo. might work for a Mutt? Don't know about other vehicles. Rob Love would know, Maybe Stuart.

It really comes down to what is there for the wheel adapters and wheel nuts. Show a photo of the two wheel adapter plates and we will know. The photo shown they almost look like 5/4 ton adapters, which are much deeper than the Iltis or M151A2.
The drums, rope, T wrench and equalizer were the same for all the vehicles. |

Here is a picture of the 2 different types of studs for the plates, the long ones I believe are for the Mutts and the short ones are for the 5/4. The adapter plate is also for the 5/4 where the flat plates fit the Mutts and the Iltis and the iltis also has different studs as well.

Marc, good luck but I won't be buying.
A hundred and fifty years ago, the M38A1s had a percentage of With Winch models. In the Reserves these were seldom used. We were kids and although there was a Performance Check in our training to learn how to run the winch, most of the instructors had little or no experience running them. Towing was the preferred way of getting unstuck, and every available 15' steel cable with a triangular or oval end was distributed across the recce troop. I remember using them once. There were no M151A2s or Iltis With Winch. The Unstucker kit was a staff idea to keep single vehicles mobile. Good idea, but IMHO not a success. The kit almost always stayed in one of the bins - because it was on the checklist. In Bosnia '02-'03 the HQ where I was posted had a number of Itli' and I clearly remember having to stand out in the rain learning about chaining up. The driver had to clamp the links shut against resistance, and then rubber bungee the whole thing snug. Staying on the road or at least just skating on it, was probably the lesser of two evils.

I concur with Dave's assessment of the parts. The M151 did not use a tapered wheel nut...the ones he shows are correct for that application. The long tapered ones are for the 5/4 ton.
As a mechanic, we did not particularly like the unstucker plates. It meant we needed to use 2 or 3 sockets to remove a wheel. And the tiny cross wrench that came with the kit was too short to work on the wheel nuts. We would remove them, replace the long wheelnuts with normal ones, and put the kits in the back of the truck. Re Terry's assessment of operators and winches, I recall operators calling us when they got stuck despite there being several winches on the vehicles at the location of the casualty. Wisely, the operators knew they were entering dangerous territory once you hooked up the winch cable and did not have sufficient experience. Not everything is a 1:1 straight pull. Also great stories which explains perhaps why this was /is an NOS item never used. I bought it never intending to actually use it, but as an accessory for display, (but again never did) Still, it obviously could be of use for someone going off road, or for display... I know some hate the Iltis, but i've really enjoyed driving it around in the nice summer weather, and I like the ability to go highway speed if needed. (seldom in my case although i did drive the 401 with no problem at all in the couple hundred km from Montreal to Gananoque, where it spends its life now. It's really quite cool to drive something so incredibly basic (as are all jeeps) compared to the pushbutton, computerised, automatic, touch screen even self driving things of today. You really do have to know how to drive these old vehicles. When I see some of the driving schools today (with EVs no less) and how they seem to be teaching new drivers...sheesh. PS are those 2 antennas on the front of the Iltis? One i guess HF? the other?
