Default ...and worst yet.....

...and to make matter worst.....

Did you know "FURD" also made the Chebby brake drums.....

NOW for a legitimate restoration questions.....

...how do you remove the large seal inside the drum without butchering it????

.....how do you remove the bearings????

if you look at the picture above,,, the outside of the brake drum had 3 threaded holes for the cap....... I imagined that I could put 5/16 bolt in there and push out the inside bearing... no such luck the holes are deadened......

NOTE... so far all bearing show extensive wear and will all have to be replaced.

Keep going! The bearings are probably frozen in place and held in with dried up grease for good measure. I tried using 3 bolts to evenly press out the bearing, it seemed much kinder than whacking it with a punch as shown in the manual. It worked!

Default Thanks Tony

I have already removed all the bearing races from the rear drums using the proverbial brass drift pin...... but there is not much room for a brass punch on the front drums.

Yes there is a large amount of very stiff grease inside the hub. I may try again with the 3 bolts but will use good quality grade 8 bolts and some "Release lubricant".

I consider myself lucky... so far all the bearings that I have removed are in very good conditions.

Back to the barn......
