If anyone has any photos of the May and June 1940 parades [at Aldershot?] of the 1st Canadian Division could they please send them?
I have a photo the pictorial history of the Canadian Army overseas of HM The King and Queen inspecting Canadian troops "early in the war" but it cannot be June 1940 as the Queen has a hat with a Maple Leaf badge on it. There are what appear to be CMP 60-cwt. GS trucks in the background. |

Dave,
Photos are probably available but if you go to the DND Directorate of History & Heritage site you can look up the CMHQ report on the visit to Aldershot, 3 April 1941 (Report #19). There are other reports of their Majesties visiting the 3rd and later the 5th Divisions. As to HM's Maple Leaf brooch. I believe that this was a gift from their Royal Visit to Canada in 1939, just months before the outbreak of war.

Hi David;
Is the attached picture the one you refer to. The image I've posted is from the following publication: CANADA'S WEEKLY, No. 3011, Vol. CXVI. The photo itself, is from a series of Canadian Official Military Photographs that were taken on 8th June, 1940, during a visit by their Majesties with the 1st Division, C.A.S.F. There are 12 photos altogether. Cheers ![]()

Note the Ford F15s [I assume that they're Fords, from other records]. These were probably the first CMPs assembled at the Southampton Plant. This was taken of course just before elements of the 1st Division were sent on a goose chase to France. EDITED: HAVING LOOKED AT A BLOWUP OF THE PHOTO, I am pretty certain that they are indeed Fords because of the radiator guard having been fixed just at the rear of the bumper and not front and back.

May I ask if the other photos published are of interest as these are the first known CMPs actually in service in the UK?

Hi David;
Regarding Ford F15's - yes they are, I had sent you this picture last Fall and I remember you identified them has Fords. In regards to the other 11 photos of the series of Canadian Official Military Photographs that were taken on 8th June, 1940, during a visit by their Majesties with the 1st Division, C.A.S.F., the one I posted of their Majesties with the Toronto Scottish troops, is the only one that has a vehicle in it, the rest are with troops. Cheers ![]()
