More by accident than design, I ended up buying four 10.50x16 Mittas type tyres in the recent Jacksons sale.
My plan was to fit these on to my C15TA inlieu of the current 9.00x16's. I have an original NOS Avon 1950's production WD marked tyre I was going to use as the spare. My problem is firstly the Mittas tyres appear to be only marginaly bigger than the current 9.00x16's, and secondly the original 10.50x16 tyre is bigger again. Tyre sizes obviously refer to the wilth of the body and the rim to which they are being fitted to, but surely during the war at least there must have been standard exterior diameters for any set tyre size. Any comments? Three of these tyres were fitted on to war-time dated split rims and will presumably bolt straight on to my vehicle. |

Neil, I had a similar discovery with two NOS 9.25-16's being smaller than other 9.00-16's. Baffling. I have also quite a few 7.50-16 NDCC Bar treads (Fitted to Aust Army land rovers) and it is quite common to find not only different brands being different diameters, but also among the same brands! Most end up now on a trailer.
Out of interest, did Jacksons tell you how many of the items were sold by tender or give any indication of prices? |

I put a bid in on the lot of 5 Dingo tyres and when I rang Jacksons to check my bid, they said if my bid was not over £1,000, then I was not successful! That is plus 17.5% VAT as well. Also regarding the 10.50-16 Mitas tyres, I saw a set on an early Chev C15 yesterday and they did not look out of place, understandable now, if the circumference is similar to a 9.00. Richard |

I believe Mitas also do a 9.00x16 tyre in this tread pattern so these may be the ones you saw. Regarding the Dingo tyres, from memory I think they went for approximately £1180. Tony A friend placed my bid so I cannot comment on the conduct of the sale, but I believe one if not both of the current Military vehicle magazines are running articles on this sale in their next editions. Certainly the items still waiting for collection when I called were amazing. Jacksons were basically clearing their stock of post-war British A and B vehicle spares to make room for modern equipment. Hopefully the spares in particular will be preserved and not scraped. My friend placed a high bid on some 11.00x20 tyres and failed to get any, and I ended up with 4 10.50x16 tyres for approximately £170.00. Three were on war-time dated split rims and will presumably fit straight on to my C15TA. The stock of British war-time tread pattern 9.00x16 and 11.00x20 tyres is now practicaly exhausted in the UK and we are badly in need of some one to take the finanical risk and buy a container load from simmex. I hate seeing totaly inappropriate american or modern tread patterns on tyres fitted to British war-time vehicles. I have no choice with 10.50x16, but owners of British 3 tonners and 15cwt's can gang together to place an order. |
