Default 1940 Ford demonstration Video

Interesting video ( in colour) taken of the Ford MV lineup, on a demonstration course at the 1940 CNE ground , Toronto Ontario. One of our customers at the shop was in and saw a picture of our CMP's , and mentions that his dad had taken a film of some of those vehicles in 1940 and asked us if we would be interested in a copy...ummm YES. We have added it to our website for all to view. Great footage of carriers, F60H, FAT, 15cwt all 11 cabs doing some crazy stuff on an interesting course. Enjoy.

Fantastic footage, Jeff!
Great to all those CMPs bouncing around the test track - poor drivers and poor trucks.
Enjoyed it immensely, thanks!

Default Wow!

What terrific footage - are you sure Max Hedges wasn't one of the carrier drivers?

The poor FGT has a bit of trouble in the bog...

There must have been a few bruised ribs along the way too.

Thanks for sharing it, Jeff.

Default Then and Now

Interesting test track.

Some thoughts:

Then: lots of spare parts...plenty of tires...very little rust.

Now: rare spare parts (at a King's ransom), old worn tires...lotsa rust.

Then: Public in awe with modern technology...

Now: Politicians in awe of ancient technology...overheard at the opening of Veteran's Highway No. 416, at which the S&P Museum had three vintage trucks and guns - "It's good to see the army out helping us celebrate the opening".

Then: petrol - pennies to the gallon.

Now: petrol - a mortgage payment to fill the truck.

Any other thoughts?

Jeff:

Took about an hour to download...dial up at 26.4 isn't too swift.

Interesting about the airplane rides rotating on the midway behind the MV display.

I think that the track, as shown, most probably formed the pattern for Road and Transportation types for the highways in the GTA (Inside joke for fellow sufferers who have to traverse the god-awful pot hole ridden roads near the Toronto area).

Keith: I also noted the CGT having a problem. Wonder why they didn't demo the use of the winch?

Was the sign on the hoarding "Ford Motor Company of Canada"?

If it was, then cf p87 of Gregg's "Blueprint for Victory".

I guess, therefore that Toronto was then, as now, Liberally oriented?

RH:

WRT petrol...Yeah...when I put my CMP to bed for the winter, it'll cost some $120.00 in fuel (at today's prices) in order to fill up the tanks, plus the cost of stabilizer and lead additives and fogging stuff.

Getting to be an expensive hobby.

In my dream of dreams, some MP will produce a Bill that will give us all some form of compensatory relief, in order that we may carry on the tradition of our military heritage.

Default And Pigs Will Fly

Jon,

Special recognition for Canadian born and bred heritage...there are rare exceptions, and the politicians always point to the CWM as having done just that.

I guess the only way to beat them is to join them (funny sour taste in mouth just happend...).

Another thought - the Fords in the videos actually ran without a Chev pushing them...

Jeff that is some amazing footage. Thanks so much for posting it.

If anyone out there has the CBC show on Canada in WW2 in colour there is a sequence of a carrier going over the same ramps. However it looks like it was taken form the far side of the arena at teh ramp end. I think that there is also a few shots of the trucks going over the logs.

LOL...I've seen a few Fords recently being "rescued" by Chevs.

Good barb, RH.

Great fun - he must have been using one of those clockwork 8mm home movie cameras like my dad had when we were kids - film speed got screwy as the drive wound down, and of course, it had to be rewound just when things got interesting. Would have been nice to see if they got that gun tractor and the 15 cwt out of the mudhole on their own power.

"Tanks" again!

That looks like as much frame articulation as axle articulation on that 6x6.

Default Gee Bob - that was an easy ride

Jeff first I want to thank you for sharing those neat films. Gives people some ideas for future rally field layouts. Wonder if those are the same trucks which are shown in a display haul all neat and clean in one of Bill Gregg’s books?

Bob- That was a gentle trail ride next time I'll look for some more challenging terrain to drive over (strike that) drive through. You should have been on the black out trail ride the night before. Its been years since I've lead a convoy through the woods on only the blackout lights alone. In the dark, there is no pretense of driving around the holes in the road.

The F60H is a 6x4.
The two "whiteout" patches near the end, does anyone else see a plane in a dive?

Hey Everyone, Glad you all enjoyed that video clip. Some interesting driving I must say !!! Those poor drivers had to be some kinda sore after some of those bumps, as we all know how little padding or protection a CMP provides for the human body. Don't think I will be trying it anytime soon !!!
Whoever mentioned about the short glimps of a plane in a dive is dead on. As well on the copy of the film provided to use, was some hell drivers on WLC harleys and some 1940 sedans driving though fire, jumping abus etc.. quite amazing for the times, and of course no safety stuff like todays stunt drivers !!!

Default Seat belt were for sissies....

In 1940 seat belts for open cockpit aircrafts so you would not fall out....

In CMPs if you have noticed the arly cab 11, at least, had a paded ceiling patch about the driver and pass. side... they way I see it fi you are tall as I am ... you wedge yourself between the seat and the ceiling pad and let her loose. Can't rattle your brains 'caused if you had any you would not own and drive an ol' CMP in the first place.

The truth be known... I plan to install eye bolts in my CMP with quick removable belts.... just in case I go crazy at a future CC in Chatsworth..... hihihi...

Default What gets towed by what!

Roberto!

I guess this would be a bad place to point out that your beloved C8A has spent the last many years being towed around by a Case tractor!

Default Case of ...

Mikey,

As mentioned - more mileage than when on its own frame! Case indeed. Reminds me of an old joke, but this is too pure of a venue for the witty ramblings of a non PC, former red-leg.

So, when are you off to the Dark Continent? Keep a sharp eye out for former CA vehicles. Also, avoid chumming around with Mel Lastman!!

On a more serious note, have you put together a storage plan? Should I hold an auction while you are away?

Rob

P.S. fill us in on the airshow (-)

Default Shit wagon....

Hi Mike.... where ever you are!!!

Apparently the last dying days of that Cab 12 C15a was as a manure spreader mounted on the rear extended frame...... probably initally onder its own power then towed...... but it still has some good parts....hihihi.... will probably tear down the front axle this weekend to see what I can salvage..... the rest will wait future use while serving as a body stand for the Rob's happy yuppy HUPee.

Hoping for a lonnnggg warm Fall.......

Default C15 Manure Spreader

Hi Bob:

I'm still here and frantically trying to put all the toys away before I get shipped out somewhere cold (Nova Scotia) or somewhere warm (Kenya)... I know which one I'm hoping for!

I believe I saw a listing (our expert friend, Mr Hayward, may need to step in here) for a production run of C15A Manure Spreaders. They were to be issued to the public affairs chaps with a few held on standby in case any politicians dropped in on the troops to see what a sucking chest wound looked like!

Alex Blair can probably help us out with the manual for the C15 BS as I'll call it from now on... he's well known for his lack of political correctness and his ability to spin his own tales once in a while! (Alex, forgive me, I couldn't resist!)

Of course after I've been known to ride around the Mess on a C15 BS myself and I know that RHC has his 404's (Canadian Military Driver's Permit; for our foreign and civilian friends) for the C15 BS as well as the C60 BS!

For heavy duty BS there was the C15TA BS which provided some shell splinter protection but none from sheep inserted land mines!

Anyway, I could beat this topic to death :dh: but Miss Yappee might lock onto a new target with her laser controlled, radar directed, fully automatic frying pan so I'll leave off!

Remember... Its a HOBBY and its supposed to be FUN! (He says after an exhausting four days at the Ottawa International Airshow!)

Mike

P.S. Any of you guys have any idea what a 155 howitzer sounds like the morning after drinking two kegs of beer?!

Default 155's in the Morning

Why, yes, Mike. I do indeed know this sound, having fired a few "U" TOTs with 6 M-109s, 18 105 C1s and 24 US 155 towed silver tubes. Those were the days!

I loved splitting the 800 meter bracket and recording as target ZU 1001. After the requisite time check we waited until H-hour. Target records were passed and the C/Ss reported ready in record time, as it was us lowly militia versus the regs, Cdns versus the yanks, Atlantic gunners versus 5 RALC (Rounds allover La Campagne) and Secteur L'Est versus W Bty. A little competition goes a long way, but a lot of competition really got the CPs and gun platforms running. I gotta tell you, Div Crump is Boss!

Fond memories of a bygone era. Just caught an imaginary whiff of cordite, and had to wipe a tear from me eye...

Remind me to tell about a certian Secteur L'est "drop short" while the Col Cmdt was in my OP trench...

Sheldrake/Conrod sends.

Default C15 BS......

Hi Mike.....

Now maybe... just maybe... I should restore the CC2 Cab 12 from Don to the original manure spreading version...... I do in fact have a few complete old Manure spreader on my property... now that would be a real Hoot to put it back in its post war livery.....no shit!!!!

Wonder if Jeff and Dan have a picture of what it looked like before the spreader was taken off the frame.....

God only knows I would find plenty to fill it in Ottawa....

What do you think Rob????
