Hi....I am looking for a ppg paint code for a 1942 u/c. I have the color chips for their military camoflauge paints and the lusterless olive drab looks close to a color I uncovered under the roller protectors on the main beam. If anyone knows of a already forulated paint please let me know.

Paint - what a contentious issue!
I tried for some time to get a "correct" colour for my carrier - and did just what you have. I took a bin that had good paint under the lid - free of oil, dirt, rust and not weathered by the sun - and had the paint guy match it. Is it right - I don't know? Does it look good - I think so. I have consulted the paint guys at the defense assembly plant where I work and they told me many stories about how old time paint was not UV stabilized and if you take a part wrapped in paper for 50 years and place it next to a vehicle made the same day the paint will not be the same colour. The colour, however, was not the biggest problem in reproducing the paint job on my MkII* U'Carrier. The gloss was. The first paint sample I recieved was a great colour - but way too shiney. All of the automotive paints are way too shiney. The painter will have to put lots of 'flattner' into his paint gun. He will not like the way it sprays - but it will dry lusterless - the way you want it. The new military vehicles that we make today are not all the same colour, either. Parts get painted at different suppliers, the application is never uniform - many things influence what the final clour will be. And this is with the benefit of modern paint, good lighting, and not being at war at the time. Looking back, I think the paint job on the bits I have are really well done. I have seen Carriers that are tan, green, brown, and with the Mickey Mouse Ears applied - and they ( mostly ) all looked great. Just because they were Carriers. Stewart Beachville |
