Default Blue UC trailer...???

Hi Guys

Some while back I saw a posting that included a blue trailer sporting tandem CMP 20" wheels.... being used to transport a UC...... background seemed wet..... maybe from the UK....could not have been Aussie since they had green foliage and no snad in the picture......

Would like to track down the owner for info on how he built his trailer and how it performs.

Thanks for you help

Pity you weren't in the UK Bob as I made a purpose built military style trailer for my carrier. Its now for sale as I am building a wee transporter truck. Haven't heard of the blue one over here. There was a lovely copy of the small cranes trailer at Beltring a couple of years back which was being used to carry a T16. The trailer was a smaller copy and looked the part.

Default 6 ton transporter

Bob, why not get yourself the "proper" transporter, I believe for sale at LWD parts in Holland. Would sure be special, even more so with a Diamond T or Mack to pull it!

Could you share some pics with us, please?

See pictures of that trailer here. The T16 was sold shortly after Beltring 2002, don't know if the trailer went with it though.

Default Trailers.....

Thanks guys......

Chris..... I would have to work hard to convince tha wife that I should get a Mack the C15 was hard enough of a sell.....

Nigel... any chance of seeing a copy of that trailer you built .... it might give me some ideas...... did your trailer have any suspension springs or did you rely on the tires to absorb road bumps..???

Marc from Convoy may also have a lead on a Canadian model but I have not been able to reach him.

Default Bel02 trailer

The carrier and trailer Hanno mentions that was sold at Beltring 2002 was brought by Tobin Jones, England.
Nigel might have his number.

Default Me trailer

Hanno will take a few wee photies of my trailer next time I'm at the Hangar.

Bob the trailers undercarraige is based on Landrover running gear, special chassis and oh yes springs! It tows really well and is balanced to perfection. A one man operation to unhitch and hitch up despite having lock airbrakes!
By the way Bob cool surname! Swap you?

Default How did you do it????

Hi Nigel

Need to get somethings cleared up... are you the owner of the blue trailer with "Wartime Xmas" on the side used to carry the UC...as featured on Convoy Forum......

If so..... how did you manage to use Land Rover running gear with the CMP rims????

Now if I have the wrong guy.... then how did you build you trailer axles.... from my experience the wheel track/width of a L R is about as narrow as the sidewalk in my village.....( actually we do not have any...hihi) you must have widdened the suckers with tubing.... was the axle cut and rewelded or is the L R axle easy to separate from the axle spindle????

So many question so little time.... and yes I to ...after listening to reason and feedback from people more expereinced....
will be using springs....

Thanks for all the advice and your time.... name wise you should meet my neighbour Sherman Phillips.... but then he is not into army trucks or tanks!!!

Default Carrier trailer

Hi Bob, sorry for the delayed reply, been laid low. My trailer is below and is not the blue one.
My trailer is made using the stub axles from the landrover welded to a tube which acts as the axle thus achieving desired width. It was a tight thing fitting the width of the carrier between the trailer wheels and come within the legal road width for a trailer over here. So much so that when I drive the carrier onto the ramps Lining up has to be within 2" either side of track for it to fit!
If I was to build another one which I would, it would be a flat wooden deck.

Here is a view of my trailer as I was having a slight unloading mishap after retruning from a show!!!

Default Oooppsss!!!

Thanks Nigel.....

what might I ask happened ...??? soft ground..... Just love that picture....

Reminds me of the time I off loaded an old Dodge power wagon off a flat bed trailer... truck would not drive so I pulled it off the float with my tractor...... well the ball hitch was loose and has the truck rolled off the trailler became unhitch rolled forward and cut in to the tail gate of the tow vehicle.... cost me a tailgate... should have taken a picture but was too mad at myself.....

Back to trailer business... did you use the leaf spring from the Land Rover...... I love the drop centers as opposed to a high platform..... everyone I talk to advises on a wooden floor for the trailer as oppose to the steel deck plates..... I am just afraid that the leaf springs will raise the center of gravity too high... if I used the srings and spring tower from a CMP they would be mounted outside the frame making it somewhat lower....

Do you have other pictures of the trailer from different angle????

Thanks for your help.

Default Bobcat trailers...

are just perfect for carriers. They have wood beam deck and are lowboys and are short . Low enough that a carrier could drive on without ramps, use the ramps though. I have seen them in tandem and triple axle styles and ball hitch and fifth wheel versions. Heavier Bobcats are 12,000-15,000LBS. Steel tracks on steel decks are just a accident waiting to happen.

I hadn't had the carrier out on the trailer for about a year and had taken it to our National Show in September. At the show the starter had jammed and I had taken it out starting on the starting handle which incidently was wonderful. I knew I couldn't do that when I got home so in my wisedom I had a plan to park up the slope with the trailer, put out the ramps, unchain and unstrap the carrier and let her roll off the trailer and down the slope where I would bump start her in reverse. Reasonable plan as she is a really good starter. As I eased the carrier onto the top of the ramps we started to move, I mean everything except the carrier! The trailer was moving with the truck being pulled down slope as well and we were heading for the wall and a ditch into our wee river. Anyway thank goodness we stopped with one of the ramps slicing the top row of coping stones off the wall.

In my rustiness and planning I had forgotten to lower the trailer rear jacks which I had installed to prevent such an accident. So when the weight in the trailer shifted it pushed the tow hitch up, weight came off the rear of the truck and although it was in low ratio gear, four wheel drive with hand brake on, it started to come down the slope. Scary and a real lesson for me. From now on its a pilots checklist. So there you go.

As far as the springs were concerned we used heavier duty springs than the landrover which don't even level out when loaded and tow really well. Trailer also is air braked with a lock breakaway in the event of separation!

The one thing I did want on the trailer, which did complicate the construction was a storage box at the front and walk on mudguards. These are a must. If you try and cover the carrier once loaded you now can almost walkround it instead of having to hold on with one hand whilst trying to secure cover with other.

Will try and take more precise photos when I'm better and more mobile.

Nigel

Default Chuckle......

Hi Nigel

I suppose it makes me an insensitive clot but I did laugh when I read your dilemna. In fact I had to go by to see the picture again.

Are you pulling that trailer with a CMP...? and I see that Modern surplus Michelin tires are popular in your neighbourhood as well.

I jsut got some but have not tired them yet. Got some very used one 900x16 tires to mount on spare CMP wheel just to move around the yard. The individual carrying capacity sure makes them attractive altough I would purchase better ones.

I have a full set (5) brand new surplus Michelin but they are saved for my 1956 C4 Dodge Power Wagon.... I will install new military (usa style) 900x16 on the C15 cab 11.... I also got a set of 1100x20 military tires, almost new, to instal on spare 20 inch C60 wheels... they will look real mean on the C15...

By the way you talk as if you had not been feeling to good lately.. I hope the Good Fairy smiles upon you and you can play silly bugger with the UC again...

Would love to see more pictures when you are up to it..... and a final question... the side beams on your trailer..... are they square tubing or U shape beams????

Thanks for all your help.
