The Morris Gutty was a first attempt by Nuffield Mechanisations to make just 3 hand-built prototypes for a light field car to the War Office spec issued in September 1944.

All three vehicles were different to each other but using a monocoque body and a 1880cc flat four engine. The vehicles were trialled extensively at Chertsey and elsewhere but found to be far short of the spec requirement.

In 1948 they effectively started again under the Wolseley banner and now with the available and standardised RR B 40 Mk.2A engine. This was the Mudlark and the Champ can be seen to be the direct development of this vehicle.

So, whilst there is a lineage from the Gutty to Champ, the Gutty is not really the Champ forefather.

R.

thanks to both of you for the info and pics. i'm intrigued by some of these prototypes. for some time i have been doing a private study of the jeep and the concept vehicles created in that class world wide. i thought the dodge 3/4 ton had a lot of varients...little did i know how many 1/4 ton vehicles there actually were...and the study goes on

These two photos will interest you Mike they were taken at one of the late John Carters MV rallies way back in the early 1970s. I canot remember if it was the genuine thing or a replica, if the latter it was a supurb job. I have never seen this utility version since any one in the UK have a idea as to its outcome
