As a follow on from the allied soft skin thread this one is intended to cover the peroid from the mid 1950s to the present time and is aimed to cover heavy transporters, recovery artillery tractors etc

IT seems to be all quiet here on the front so heres another modern.
The Unipower MH8875 8x8 tractor designed as the replacement for the Scammell Commander. This massive tractor trialled by the British army coupled to a Nicolas TST 70 MD 6/2 multi wheeled semi trailer lost out as we all know to the American built Oshkosh. Built ofall welded structure the trailer featured hydraulic independent suspension and steering on the rear four axles. This trials unit is seen in the middle east |

Seems to be very slow does this thread, i cant believe that out of a thousand plus members there are no photos or info on PW heavyweights. Lets face it from say 1950 up untill today there have been hundreds of types world wide that could be included so hopefully a few more item than mine will appear. Its over to you

The YHZ2300 was used for towing the M114, (modified) M114/39 and FH70.

A couple more interesting shots for the heavyweights of the Scammell Crusader 6x4 EKA recovery vehicle, a long serving truck in the British army untill quite recently and i believe one or two are still there prehaps Richard has the awnser as a long serving REME fitter

They are coming through the sales quite regularly now, so not sure if there are many still in service. We recieved one at Workshops to replace an AEC medium recovery (Militant Mk3) around 1978, when they entered service. The one in your photos is likely to be a trials one as the census number is early and it has Leyland on the front where all EKA wreckers had Scammell. Also it is in gloss Deep Bronze Green, none of the production ones were supplied in gloss, it was IRR olive drab. Ours served us for about 18 years, normal repairs plus a new cab (rusted out) and engine change. Richard |

These Foden 10 ton gun tractors were used in limited numbers by the British army in the 1970/80s. I only ever saw them twice in all that time ,once down in Dorset and a convoy on the M20 in kent. They are now obsolete to the army and very few have turned up in preservation so to see two at War and Piece last year with the correct bodies was indeed a treat as can be seen in the photos

Am I right in thinking that the Foden 10 ton, like the one you saw at Beltring used to tow the FH 70? As Withams Specialist sales sometimes have these guns, the owner of the Foden could have a proper load to tow!

Sorry Larry, i never came back on your question yes these are the tractors built to tow the FH70 howitzer

A nice shot covering the past generations of British army tank transporters, post war Diamond T, THornycroft Antar MK2 Antar MK3 and Scammell COmmander all now gone from service. The Commanders were sold to Jordon i was informed for £1.00 each now i wonder what was behind that little set up, a lot of money had been thrown at them to update just a few years back. The Oshkosh is the only one missing but was not envisaged at the time the photo was taken

Finally tonight a 1950s shot of the early wooden bodied Scammell Constructor, these were used in the main by the Royal Engineers to transport plant but some were issued to theRAF
