My number is : C15A #C14441-M 1500CWT serial 38442422564. The Montreal police got on file a number AU 38442422564, that was recorded for 1948, I beleived the C15A building stop before 1945? According to the serial plate my C15A was build in 29 Sept 1943 They will not release the form for registration. Can someone help me please ? |

Hi Gilles,
No, I don't think the same serial number can be used on more a different GM model. The GM CMP chassis serial number consists of 10 digits: The first digit is the contract year of the vehicle. The next 4 digits are the factory series number, e.g. 8444 is for a C15A. ( 8442 is for the C-60S - 3 ton 4x4, 134" wheelbase ) The last 5 digits represent the number of the vehicle in order of manufacture, beginning at 00001, for the model year. One source for this information is on pages A-2 to A-10 in the MB-C2 Maintenance Manual. Your C15A serial number seems to be for a C60S and has one too many digits (6) after the model number, but data plate errors do happen. GM CMP production stopped around the end of August, 1945 Hope this helps. Brian |

A couple of things may have happened; the S/N recorded by the Montreal Police may have been badly transcribed; the data plate you have is not original to the vehicle you have or, and this is probably more likely; the number and date used by the Montreal Police reflect the date that the vehicle was first registered in the civilian world. I have a 1970 Triumph TR-6 that remained on the dealer's lot until 1971 before it was registered for the first time and the province (Ontario) considers it a 1971 and refuses to treat it as a 1970. Hi Gilles,
Years ago the late Peter Ford from Saskatoon collected CMP serial number information and created the CMP INFOEX. Nothing has happened with it since his death in 2000 or 2001. From the Dec 1989 issue of INFOEX: Make: Chev Model: C15A Date: Sept 29,1943 Serial # 3844422564 Engine # WR3918724 Contract 134-186-38 Cab 13 Body GS-2 I am sure this information would have come from the serial number data plate. The only other info there is the owner was J. Cote, in Canada. So I would think that your serial number is correct except that the first "2" in "38442422564" is there in error and should be removed. Hope this helps. Good luck getting it straightened out for registration. Brian |
