What low lives live in this country.
Decorated soldier stunned by nasty bar beating Updated Tue. Mar. 13 2007 12:49 PM ET CTV.ca News Staff A recently decorated Canadian soldier honoured for his military valour in Afghanistan is still puzzled about why he was jumped from behind and beaten in his hometown bar this past weekend. Master Cpl. Collin Fitzgerald, who was recognized by Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean on Feb. 19 for braving enemy fire in Afghanistan, had his foot broken in three places and needed 10 stitches to close a cut above his right eye. Fitzgerald, 27, also suffered a broken nose and two black eyes in the Friday night attack in his hometown of Morrisburg, Ont., about one hour south of Ottawa. Fitzgerald is well known in his small town. He says he'd been in the bar only about 20 minutes, visiting with childhood friends, when he was suddenly struck from behind. Four men jumped him and began beating on him. "They were saying 'What kind of hero are you now?'," Fitzgerald's mother Arlene told CTV News. Bystanders pulled the attackers off Fitzgerald and his friends drove him to hospital. Ontario Provincial Police later arrested an unidentified 21-year-old Morrisburg man and charged him with aggravated assault. Const. Paul Murphy said more charges are expected to be laid against the man. Police also expect to lay charges against several other suspects, he said. Fitzgerald says he still has no idea why he was attacked. He served eight months in Afghanistan and is a weapons instructor at CFB Trenton. He was one of the first recipients of the Canadian Medal of Military Valour, "for outstanding selfless and valiant actions" carried out on May 24, 2006, during an enemy ambush "involving intense, accurate enemy fire." According to the military, Fitzgerald "repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire by entering and re-entering a burning platoon vehicle and successfully driving it off the roadway, permitting the remaining vehicles trapped in the enemy zone to break free." Arlene Fitzgerald is also flabbergasted that her son was able to come home in one piece from Afghanistan, but was beaten up in his own home town. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNew...hub=TopStories |

i just saw this on the news...and it makes me sick!! thinking back over the last few years, it seems to me that our veterans, both young and old, have been taking a pile of abuse right here in the country they fought to defend. some that come to mind are the theft(s) of medals, the theft of a veterans car, the urination on the memorial last year, now this. where does it end? perhaps the idea of locking some of these b@#tards up for decades isn't such a bad idea afterall. maybe they should be turned over to the military for re education

Further to your last Mike, I wholeheartedly agree. Nowadays it's a case of jump a guy from behind, 6 on 1 or the typical gang banger mentality of drive-by shootings.
I think the judge should be able to enact the same kind of powers available to American ones... that is to say offer a choice; jail or army. I'd like to know how tough this little puke would be in bootcamp. |

chris....if these guys are lucky they will do their time and swiftly move to iceland, because a lot of people are very, very upset over this. if i were to take as fact from what i have read elsewhere, i would expect that these guys may be getting a knock on the door that they wouldn't want to answer. that being said, and in the words of an old friend," if you can't stand the heat, then don't light the fire" hopefully the courts will see fit to make examples of these guy's because i got a feeling that there is going to be quite an uproar if they don't.

You're right Mike. I could see this almost the same as beating up on a cop- take on one and you take on all.
Afterall, I'm sure this fine soldier has many friends... |

Jr. B hockey player charged with attack on soldier
By MICHAEL JIGGINS Staff Writer MORRISBURG -- Provincial police here have charged a defenceman with the town's Junior 'B' hockey team in the beating of war hero Collin Fitzgerald. Travis Baldwin, 21, was arrested Sunday and charged with aggravated assault in connection with the attack on Fitzgerald, 27, in a bar early Saturday morning. Baldwin was released with conditions and Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry OPP made his name public Tuesday. Fitzgerald was knocked unconscious in the attack, which happened while he was sitting with a friend at the bar in his hometown just before 2 a.m. Saturday. He has said he has no memory of what happened, although witnesses reported seeing four men jump him from behind and begin kicking and punching him. "I woke up and I couldn't walk on my foot and my face was just gushing with blood," he told Sun Media. Fitzgerald was treated at hospital in Winchester and suffered broken bones in his foot and cuts to his face among other injuries. A rugged defenceman and five-year veteran of the Morrisburg Lions, Baldwin will not be in the lineup when his team suits up at home tonight for the crucial Game 4 in its second-round series with Alexandria. The Lions trail two games to one. Lions GM Ron Casselman said the team suspended Baldwin at a meeting Monday night. He said he has not spoken with Baldwin since the arrest. Even without the suspension, Baldwin could not have played any night games as he is subject to a curfew as part of his release conditions. Casselman expressed disappointment that the team has been dragged into the incident in news reports. "It's got nothing to do with the hockey. It was in a bar afterwards," said Casselman, who does not think the incident will hurt his team. "I'll know more after we've played tonight, we haven't played since then. (But) I can't see it reflecting anything on it." As for his reaction to Baldwin's arrest, Casselman said he was stunned. "It still puzzles me. I'm still wondering what happened - something had to happen to trigger it," he told The Recorder and Times. He described Baldwin as an on-ice bodyguard for his teammates, who was willing to jump in to protect them. "If somebody gets a little rough, well then he'll get a little rough back É he has a short fuse, you know," explained Casselman. Listed as five-feet-11 and weighing 220 pounds, Baldwin played 20 games with the Lions this year, racking up seven points and 294 penalty minutes. Casselman said Baldwin missed several games early in the season with a broken hand. "He's a very likable kid. He's easy going off the ice. I was surprised at it, really, really surprised," he said. Fitzgerald was awarded the Medal of Military Valour by Governor General Michaelle Jean for his heroic actions in Afghanistan last May. He braved enemy fire during an ambush, driving a burning platoon vehicle off the road so his comrades could get out of the line of fire. Fitzgerald, a master corporal, was among the first four Canadian soldiers to earn the medal, which was created in 1993 for valour in combat. OPP Constable Paul Murphy said this morning police are continuing their investigation as they make their way through a list of witnesses. "We've had a good supply of people calling in," said Murphy, who would not say if police expect to charge anyone else. The constable said Baldwin does not have a criminal record and will make his first court appearance on May 1 in Morrisburg. http://newsfeed.recorder.ca/cgi-bin/...acgi$rec=21656 2 more arrested in Morrisburg soldier beating Last Updated: Thursday, March 15, 2007 | 3:31 PM ET CBC News Another two men have been arrested and charged with assaulting a decorated soldier at a bar in his hometown of Morrisburg, Ont., early Saturday morning. Ian Tait, 22, and Jeremy Stewart, 19, have each been charged with assault causing bodily harm, said an Ontario Provincial Police news release issued Thursday. Both men are from Morrisburg, about 60 kilometres southeast of Ottawa. They will appear in court on May 1, along with Travis Baldwin, 21, of Morrisburg, who was charged Monday with aggravated assault. OPP Const. Paul Murphy said witnesses are still calling police with information about the beating that left Master Cpl. Collin Fitzgerald unconscious, with a broken nose, fractured foot, and other injuries. "Whether other charges will come out of that, that's a guess," Murphy said. "At this point we have to see what evidence comes out and what people saw." Fitzgerald, 27, won a Medal of Military Valour for his service in Afghanistan. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/stor...g-charges.html |

This is nuts. I've been on the receiving end of swarming by junior high girls when I was in grade school still. They terrorize and I never understood since I didn't even know them nor them me. They were totally unknown to anyone me and others "knew" They just targetted me in particular one day and got me on my walks home from school and harassed me whenever they spotted me. Just getting their jollies. These kids grew up. I assume, and are adult bullies now. Like the guys who did this probably. They don't need reasons or any provocation. Just targets when the mood hits them? Karmen |

Too many times does a post go off tangent but I feel this needs to be added.
Casselmans says this has nothing to do with hockey. Bullshit, I say! Why? Because whether you enjoy the game of hockey or not, it is an inevitable part of Canadian culture. It is the same as french toast, the beaver, the maple leaf- a symbol of our identity. Our youth idolizes hockey players like gods. Their behaviour both on the ice and off influences Canadian youth. It is obvious to me that this coward is a power tripper, racking up huge penalty points by being a short fused, on ice bully. Nothing more than a paid thug really. We all know the value of a good defenceman, but similar to commandoes, they need intense discipline and a short leash to keep them inline. This piece of s**t needs to be kicked out of the game permanently just for being an a**hole. He should be shunned by his community. I would love to hear what Hockey loudmouth Don Cherry has to say about this one, afterall, he always speaks highly of our troops. Being the man that he is, I am sure Collin Fitzgerald will hold his head and graciously let justice do its thing. |

I found a local Morrisburg Blog spot and have been following it ...
Interesting reading... I know booze..bars...fights...military...bars..booze and more fights...so know from first hand experience that when booze is involved any thing can happen and usually does.. But the truth will be revealled ,hopefully on 7th May when the perps go to court.. Here is a posting from the blog site and a link to read and follow along,as I'm sure not all has been said yet...and according to this poster there is a fourth perp..yet to be charged... Burgian said, March 16, 2007 at 1:36 pm to tell you the truth warren.. people from Morrisburg aren’t trying to dilute the situation. there was a fight, and it was 4 on 1.. which was witnessed by many people.. especially family of mine that was there right near Travis when the whole thing started. we don’t try to dilute the situation to make it look less bad on us because when it comes down to it. it wasn’t the town’s fault the town should not get everyone commenting on the people in the town.. it was the 4 scumbags who have given our town this bad reputation now.. and believe me, i know a lot of people from Morrisburg and from being there myself i am not diluting the situation and who are probably just as/even more angry than alot of people elsewhere. Not to mis-interpret this as me lecturing you (warren) i just want to make sure that people that read this don’t get the wrong impression. i am actually agreeing with you in a sense.. it wasn’t a one on one bar fight.. there was 4 on 1 vs. Fitzgerald and you’re right I’m pretty sure his (travis and his friends) goon status has definitely intimidated people from coming forward… along with his 3 other p*ssy friends (Jeremy stewart, ian tate, and evans bedzra -> who is trying to get out of this but was definately, definately involved). so i say this, don’t say any bad remarks about our town and about our people, only the 4 disgusting individuals who have decided to be exceedingly stupid.. oh and onlooker about the comment where travis never said ” you aren’t so tough now” he actually did say it, and i heard about it before it even hit the news.. so when ur defending your dear travis baldwin and his scum friends, get the facts, and by the facts, i mean stuff that hasn’t come out of their mouths.. because they’ve been lying since they learned how, back in kindergarden. you must be family because only family could be so blind Blog spot.. A step in the right direction... http://splatto.net/blog/?p=507#comment-5675 ![]() ![]() ![]()
