Default Ferret and SDKFZ clone

A friend of mine and myself just recently acquired two new toys: a Ferret and and what seems to be a Tatra OT 180 transformed as an SDKFZ 251... Now, I just ordered a set of manuals from England for the Ferret but I can't find anything on the SDKFZ/OT 180! Since these two have been sitting in a barn for about 3 years, they do not just strat up and run... And even if they could, we have no idea how to operate them, let alone service them... Anyone has any documentation on the Ot 180 or the german SDKFZ?? At least the starting routine and where the diesel goes would help! :-)

If you have any problems plating the Ferret, e-mail me, and I may be able to help....maybe. Mine is plated with a "C" plate. Oh I'm just outside Montreal by the way, so if you do want to drive to the BBQ, it would be neat to see a couple of scout cars driving down old hwy 17. With a compliment of softskins of course.
Bob, I'm going to try my best to make it this time!!

Hi!

I don't have any picture available right now. I will try to post some when I have to chance to take a few.

I don't think plating the Ferret is something I will do any time soon as I don't even know how to start the thing yet and there is some work to be done before it can be fired up anyway!

With my work I have not even had time to plate my two Iltis!!

Default Ferret operation

Go to my website and look at the various articles about
the Ferret.

DO NOT try and drive it till you understand the gearbox and
GCP (Gear Change Pedal - it is NOT a clutch pedal).

You really want to study and learn the following article
but do look at the other Ferret stuff especially oils and other
owners experiences!

Doug

F-L,
If you want a few pointers, I could take a sunday drive out your way and check it out for you. Do not try to move it without priming the Generator, and pumping the GCP 20 or so times in each gear (it alignes the gearbox bands). You should jack up one side of the ferret and ensure the wheels turn together (bevel box and transfer box quick checks) and do the same on the other side.
ALWAYS park it in the lowest gear! The GCP should be in the up position when in gear. It releaves strain on the gearbox springs. I also try not to engage the park brake leaver for long periods of time, to avoid brakes sticking.
And the list goes on and on.

Default Ferret

Thanks for all the pointers!

I just received a copy of a British 1969 User Handbook for the Ferret (from MLRS Books in England) so now at least I have some info on the vehicle!

I am still looking for anything on the Tatra OT 180 or the German SD.Kfz 251...

... aren't you looking for a OT 810 (instead of 180)? That's the Sdkfz 251 clone.

Try the guys at Festungsmuseum. They have a running and operating OT810. That's the one I filmed some months ago.

Cheers
Chris
