Real nice looking truck you have there mike i can think of a few that would like a workshop like that also myself included it looks to me as though you have made a good job of the vehicle id like to see a front veiw if thats poss regards vic uk

Thanks for your nice words . I re - built it during the 90's . I had to fabricate a new 1A1 body . The plans were kindly supplied by a C8 owner in the UK, Ian Richardson , he measured the body from the vehicle now owned by Nick Bullock . I still have to install a wireless set , have got a chorehorse for it , a NOS one I bought back in 1980 . It's rather slow on the road , and very noisy . The tyres are too old for road use . The engine has a loose piston pin , it rattles . Mike |

I wondered whether this was one of the numerous Ford and Chevrolet CMPs purchased under Contract BM/2V83.WS6 (D) by the Ministry of Supply from Canadian stocks [in the UK] and then shipped out to the Mid-East for the AIF, etc.? I still have no idea what BM/2V83.WS6(D) or BM/2783.WS6(D) was and what it broke down as. Any ideas please?

May I have a copy of the photo of the truck outside please? I would like it for my history of the CMD at Southampton, as I am sure that this was originaly assembled in Southampton and then shipped out again in late 1940 to Alexandria. In case you were wondering, there were no # 11 Cab C8 CMPs in British order until S/M 2029, with a mix of # 11 and # 12 Cabs, e.g. # Model 8420X2 # 1842008354 # Z 4544183 with the Duple bodies.

Hi Mike,
I note the rego plate on your C8 and it would appear to be the one I saw at Corowa. in '99 I think. My photo shows it as wearing the WD number Z4544170, which puts it in British contact no. SM 2029. I well remeber this truck, as I pointed out to a friend that it must have been well travelled as it would have been bodied in the UK (Duple) before going to the M.East campaign and then on to Australia. Thanks for the serial number! I have added it to my database. On checking my database I found that I know of one 1940 Model C8, which must therefore have been a Canadian order, but now in Aussie. This cannot have been an original British order, as all were serialled as 1941 Models, although outstanding Canadian orders carried on even after British start-up at the end of August 1940, with 1940 Model Year prefixes. S/M 2029 consisted of British order C8s, that were landed then shipped off again, plus some that were diverted and delivered to Alexandria direct. The 2029 contract also included some Dodge D8 Personnel trucks as well. S/M 2030 was the Ford F8 order, and 2031 the C15 AND F15 order. Some of 2029 and 2030 were bodied as Wireless trucks, some G/S and some Personnel. Basically they were chassis-cabs bodied in the UK, or I suppose in N Africa. There are official photos available of C8 Personnel and F8 trucks in British service in the IWM, and I have a copy of the C8 one, in what I believe is a desert style camo paint job.

Yes , it would be great if these old vehicles could speak to us ! The tales of their wartime travels would be interesting . David , the cab 11 C8 , someone has swiped the plate with the serial nr . But I am sure your theory is correct , its a Middle East refugee ! The eng NO. has TRA prefix . Yes Richard , I drove it up to Corowa in 1999 on its 50 ? year old Dunlops . When are you coming over again ? We can catch up . I found a soldiers AIF number scratched into the dash on the C8 VX65738 , I tracked him down and wrote to him . He replied saying that he probably commited the vandalism while awaiting demob at Bandiana , Bandiana was a large vehicle park . Dirk , I copied all the body plans and sent them to Ruud , he has obviously passed them on to you . Credit must be given to Ian R in the UK for taking the time to complete the measuring . The plans are available to anyone who wants them . I think the 1A1 bodies were made by WD Beath in Canada , does anyone have any info on this company ? Ian R's half restored C8 is pictured , it would be a Southampton assembled one I would think . Mike |

suprised to hear you say that your c8 is slow... mine is certainly no slow and copes very well with traffic.. pity you can't see very much! I am constant suprised by just how noisy it is in the cab, because standing and listening to it going down the road it is almost silent!! The bigest improvement as you say has to be a decent set of modern tyres... I have just fitted a set of 12 ply and the truck is transformed. Still not the driving dream of a C8A, but no where near as heavy as it was to drive (steering) on the old 6 plys and tyres.... I do have something of a dilema though, my c8 is starting to look a little scruffy, though previous owners have tarted it up a bit, its never actually been restored... so hpw for do you go? I would like to have it end up looking like yours but may just destroy some of its hostory in the process.... It still has (what looks like) the original engine.. cetainly the truck has never been apart and has no rebuild tags.... and the original serial numbers can be seen under the paintwork..... but I suppose I will have to decide soon!!!! In the mean time... how do you get a timing light onto it? kind regards Nick |

i would value your thoughs on my C8s serial number. Unfortunately when it arrived here the data plate was missing though I am assured that it was present when in the hands of other collectors... However, I do have the army serial for this truck, it is infact still painted on the cowlings.... cz4211659, the engine number... (engine appears to be an original 216, but again you'd know better than me). certainly there are no rebuild tags in place on the dash. Number is 2802530. The truck serial I do not have, however on the original release note the truck is identified as having GM number 913. That is besides the sale number and lot numbers etc.... so my guess would be that the truck number is 0842000913. How does that sound to you? Am I just making this up? kind regards nick |

The engine # conforms with known examples, but I only have one other in my database with serial #. It could be 00983...we need more early serials with engine numbers to confirm. That said, it's an excellent guess.

Thanks Nick! As you all know the Model 8440 was the C-GT! I suspect that the plate came off a British order to S/M 2028 but it could just have been a Canadian one, with #12 Cab. Really, the more information in the database the more we know generally. And in my thesis just completed I state that we know more about 1940-41 and the vehicle supply to the UK and Mid-East than ever. Why? Because of all the data that is coming out from known vehicles. Amazing isn't it?
