For any of the Prairie rebuilders, I have a 2003 telephone number and info on some "old military trucks" owned by Mike, at the Gronlid Seed Plant (306) 277-2004. Info through a friend of a relative of mine. I had the email filed in the proverbial safe place, ie next to Elvis' unlisted phone number and my unredeemed 2005 multimillion dollar winning lottery ticket.
I THINK these are the same vehicle and the one the fellow had beside the highway. Emphasis on the speculation. Dsc01285.jpg resize of mvc-523f.jpg

That one got sold and is in Manitoba now. He had some others but most of them are gone. I have a couple of them. He's likely got a few left.

I believe that is the HUP now owned in Winnipeg by CMP Perry.

That's the one all right. Here's some he had in 2003. I ended up getting the left F15A and the box for the blue one from his brother near Regina. I traded that 2C1 box in Swift Current for my 2B1 box. The third one is a C30 and might still be there.

As I recall from looking at photos when it was for sale a few years ago that this HUP (C8A) is the rare 1945 staff car version made in 1945 for the British. This had the sliding side windows of glass, exterior door handles and different large roof hatch.

From reading the Properties on the jpegs, the images were created in Jan 04, but there is no author or camera information included. These may have been stripped when the image was posted or modified. I've added one of a data plate for a C8A (SN6407) Aug 27/45. If Cletrac or one of the others has better information, we should rely on him.

Terry
The data plate is not the easiest to read in the photo. The serial number (VIN) of the vehicle appears to be 4844521304. The "SM6407" (SM not SN) is the British Army contract number. Supply Mechanization 6407. I have a copy of a 1944 Census numbers list from Chilwell in UK (via John Marchant about 30 years ago) listing ALL British WWII WD number ranges to that date but as the list was poublished in Nov 1944, it does not show the 1945 contracts. This truck probably was never delivered to the British. One turned up in Czechoslovakia (pictured in the now defunct Wheels and Tracks magazine years ago). My friend, the late Peter J. Ford of Saskatoon SK, found a rear door and some other parts for one of these C8A HUP staff cars in Manitoba (from a vehicle that had been hit by a train as I recall?) and those went to the restoration of another such vehcle in Canada. These HUPs probably came out of the CMP stocks held post-war at MacDonald in Manitoba. ![]() Colin

Here's a pic of the data plate that's easy to read.

We have seen that one on this website before. It used to be in Saskatchewan, and made the move to Winnipeg, then later off to a little ghost town South of Austin. I zipped out tonight to have a look at it, liked what I saw, and bought it. I should have it in the shed sometime in the next few weeks.

That would be this one that came from Gronlid (or something like that) near Melfort, Sask
I liked how they flipped the floor treadplate over when they welded it in so they could put linoleum down on a flat surface. Posh, eh? Here's the other thread

One in the same. Mark did a lot of work to it, and has a lot of NOS parts to go with it. I need another project like I need a hole in the head, but it's in the neighborhood, and I always wanted a HUP. Added bonus is that it, being a Chev, should be a useful tool to keep the dust down in the quonset (ie: oil leaks).

I have known Mickey for years, although we have not talked in a while. I have always known Mickey as being from Prince Albert. He is retired military, a farmer and has a job at the paper/pulp plant up there. Mickey is really one of the good guys in the hobby, but does not use the internet much so we do not see him on this site. I'll have to ask him if there is a connection between him and this vehicle, but at this time I don't think so.
I am busy this weekend, do most likely I'll get the truck some next week. Photos to follow. |

I just checked my copy of the 1989 issue of INFOX by Peter Ford. Peter knew Mickey well, and this HUP does not show up in the INFOEX record. Peter did find a complete 1C11 HUP from the same British Contract as mine in the Melfort area in the late 1980's but the owner was not too friendly and Peter was unable to get a close look at it. He also found the train wreck HUP and got parts from it. The front end was a complete right off. Everything gone from the seats forward.

That was Mike Heiberg who owned the HUP when it was in Gronlid. He ran the seed cleaning plant in town. Most of those CMPs ended up at his brother Ken's east of Regina and I ended up with several of them.

Well I got the HUP home about an hour ago, along with a dozen or so boxes of parts...some NOS and some take-off. Photos will have to wait until at least tomorrow night I am afraid.
