Great work Andrew, and thanks to the original discoverer Mike Kelly. If not for him it would have been scrapped years ago when the yard in Ballarat was cleared after the death of the scrappie who owned it.

The hunt now continues for more pieces
So far the list for starters as of tonight comes to:
-4 x 2.5 by 1/8 channel or subframe
-2 x Ford cab 13 roof hatches
-2 x hatch frame
-Rear rollers and ancillaries for Ford
-Passenger side GT fuel tank
-Rear GT doors
-Crew doors (mine are rust swiss cheese)

Unfortunately as all sheds go ,they are never big enough and far from empty as shed is allready full with about the same or more amount of gear out the back

That's a shame... what's the chassis number? Is it a C15A chassis (8444) or is it an 8440 chassis?

Had to move the first C8 in the yard on the weekend so while it was on the forks I thought it deserved some much overdue love
Chassis repairs almost complete

Looks a much more viable project now

Repaired rear end riveting and replaced bottom fish plates

Finally found rivet supplier number (misplaced

) only to find he only did up to 5/16 ....
Other suppliers couldn't supply round head rivets or if they could very limited numbers in odd sizes ......

So ordered a batch out of US in preparation for next chassis or similar repairs .
Makes for expensive rivets

You have to buy yourself a lathe. Rivets should be easy to make .

What grade of steel are they ? Mike

PS the guy down the road here repairs and rebuilds boilers , he plays with steam traction engines and he found a lot of old rivets at a railway yard somewhere . I can ask him where to buy them.

Not sure what grade of steel they are
With the price of round bar in Aus it still works out cheaper buying them in .

I asked the experts. Hot rivets are just black bar .Some suggested they were forged as this would make the grain correct .

An old railway guy said you can make a snap by using a large grade 8 bolt, , heat up the bolt head to a bright cherry red and hit a steel ball into the head to get the dimple
