Green
The original Ford Blitz engine I had years ago was a mid green colour , much like brunswick green .
The best thing to use is mid or dark brunswick green . Wattyl make a epoxy enamel ideal for painting engines . Its available at the Cheap Auto stores in 1 litre cans . Its called killrust I think , no primer is needed . I bake it in the oven at 100 C for about 15 minutes , it goes very hard . Mike |

Someone could probably help you better if you were specific about the vehicle and year, and the country of service.
This topic has come up before, and a search finds This info for Chevs, and this for Fords.

So they are Holden assembled 1942 or 43 year. I've seen engines either black, grey or vehicle colour. The transfer case and driveshafts were khaki like the rest of the truck - if you're depicting post-war then you might consider gloss deep bronze green as an overall colour too.

All:
I picked the Ford engine green color associated with engines made during 1940 for commercial vehicles assuming that early on Ford would have used them on F8's. As for the transmission, I used black engine paint because that's all I had and I intend on changing it out anyway. The new one will use the same Ford engine green as that was on the original tranny that came with the truck. Yep! After cleaning off all the gunk, there was that green paint! As for the drive shaft and differential, they'll both be the same color as the truck itself. Regards, Jim |

Ford V8 Engine Color? Ford Gearbox Color?
Hello all, I am up to painting my engine after eternity cleaning it,
For a Sidevalve Ford V8 1942 CMP. What Color should it be? Some say The engine should be Black & Some Say Dark Olive Gloss Green for Engines. My Gearbox is definitely grey (gray). Can someone Clarify what should be what. I need a picture as evidence too. I have your pictures Tony, but any other evidence before I fill the gun and spray would help me... Its a job for Sunday afternoon. I cant wait... (and I will post pictures when its finished... Ian

Colour
That old chestnut again!
Recently the AWM had two Ford CMPs restored, a 1942 F15A and FGT No9 and after research chose to paint them black. I have seen chassis with black under the khaki. However other engines I've seen in original vehicles have been painted matt khaki as is the rest of the vehicle. Evidence from factory photographs tends to support this too. I painted Chris' F15 engine and gearbox in the vehicle colour. Air cleaners, starter, generator and oil filler pipe are black. Ultimately of course it's your choice as you're the one who has been through the hard yards of cleaning them.

Factory Pictures
I agree with you Keith,
From looking at some photos of production vehicles, they look Green, not black, cant find paint on either engine (I have) which would give me a clue either way... But I suppose it really doesn't matter. It will be a few people who will see the dang thing once its back in.. Just trying to appease the gods of criticism.. A pity there are so few colour photos.. I am beginning to appreciate the need for attention to detail. I do have the feeling that Western Desert Vehicles have had black bits with the Light Stone, whereas the 'Green machines' had green bits. Makes logical sense. Happy to take votes . ONCE its painted though its painted..! Ian

Many moons ago when I was doing the old car bit in my teens I was lead to believe that all Ford motors were painted green with starter, generator etc painted black much in the same way that Dodge motors were painted a silver grey colour with black fittings. These were carry overs from civilian production as far as the Dodge motors went so I wonder if it is correct also for the Ford motors?

I think you are correct. I have looked at a lot of B&W photos from teh era and all seem to be of that configuration as far as I can tell. Good thing I have painted all the Generator and starter black then. Everyone thanks... Painting tomorrow hopefully. Ian

Dark green engines
The subject of colours (even how the word is spelled) is a vexed one.
All I can add to the discussion is what I have observed over some 40 years of involvement including stripping many sidevalve V8s for rebuilding in the 70s. I've seen ex-military ones painted Khaki over black, and I have seen those painted khaki without another colour underneath. If you look at some of the Ford factory pictures of CMPs being assembled you'll see they were vehicle colour, with engine accessories such as starter, generator, conduits, oil filler pipe, carb and breather air cleaners painted black. All this leads me to believe there is no single 'correct' answer. I wonder whether the dark green was for US or non-military production.
