Greetings, Zipperhead!
The Grey & Simcoe Foresters, here in Owen Sound, had an informal welcoming ceremony for a bunch of returnees, noting that another 30 are good to go for a roto in August. BTW, does the name Angus Goss (CWO, RCD) ring a bell? If it does, I'll tell you about how he and I have gotten together. Regards

Re: St George's Day in Kandahar
Quote:
St. George's Day is celebrated on April 23rd. St. George's Day is not an official national holiday in Canada. It is, however, a provincial holiday in Newfoundland and Labrador, where it is usually observed on the Monday nearest April 23rd. St George is the patron saint of England. He is the patron of soldiers and archers, cavalry and chivalry, of farmers and field workers, Boy Scouts and butchers, of horses, riders and saddlers. He is also the patron saint of Aragon, Catalonia, Genoa, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Istanbul, Lithuania, Moscow, Palestine, Portugal, and of Venice (second to St. Mark). According to legend, St. George, a soldier of the Imperial Army, rescues a town in what is now Libya from the tyranny of a people-eating dragon. St. George overpowered the beast and then offered to kill it if the townspeople would convert to Christianity and be baptized. The story is that there were 15,000 conversions on the spot. Openly espousing Christianity was dangerous and eventually the authorities of Emperor Diocletian arrested George. He was martyred about 303 AD.

Hi
Jon Nice to see towns doing something for their troops. I myself got a giant postcard that made the rounds for signature at a Moncton Wildcats game. Herr Gosse was our RSM at the RCD so of course I know him. Most recently he was my Land Forces Atlantic Area Chief. Retired now I believe. Did he touch down in your neck of the woods? Alex Just so any of them are not offended if they see this post; my QRF is not a "zipperhead" force. They are a Field Sqn from the RAF Regiment. Great bunch of hard working blokes. Thanks for the data on St George as well. regards Darrell |
