The launch is booked out. Even Warren was surprised when I contacted him today to say there were no more seats left. He thought he would be the only one there with his dog. Anyhow the lady at the Mitchell Library said they were looking at what they could do as they had been inundated with responses. A larger area was found and it is now booked out. Warren has agreed to attend the next AMVCS meeting on Wednesday 14th November and will give a talk to members and anyone who is interested in hearing about his experiences.

Hi everyone - been away from the site for some time, but now the book's finished! Huzzah! Thanks Jan for posting this message. I've attached a link to the incredibly rare film I've discovered depicting Francis Birtles on his drive from London to Melbourne 1927-28. I hope this works - btw the Taralga Machinery Festival is on next month - Fred Reeves id bringing his Puddle Jumper and I'm taking out the C60X. Cheers Warren.

Congratulations, Warren, on the release of the book.
I heard your interview with Jonesy and Amanda and they were quite right when saying that it is amazing that very few people know about Francis Birtles. I'm sure that, in other parts of the world, his name would be whispered in awe.
Did you find out if Beeb Birtles is related?
Cheers
H

For anyone who has a Kmart store nearby you can pick up a copy of the book for $25. Other bookshops have it for sale at $35. If anyone wants to hear Warren's talk at the AMVCS meeting you are more than welcome to attend on Wednesday 14th November.

Thanks Howard and Rich. (Not to mention Jan and Richard!)It's funny - everyone asks whether Beeb Birtles (from Little River Band) is related and the answer is - probably! I interviewed Francis Birtles young niece Muriel Tait (aged around 96) and his whippersnapper nephew Calvert Birtles (who's about 86) - neither of whom knew each other btw - and learned that the Birtles clan is flung far and wide. Muriel's probably the only living person who actually remembers interacting with Frank Birtles - he'd pretty much burned his bridges with all his siblings, but her mother seemed to be the only one who tolerated him. Francis was one of nine kids -and even though he had no kids of his own - there were plenty of nieces and nephews who had been ingrained with the awareness he was a bit of a rogue and it filtered down through the generations. Last week I was interviewed on ABC News 24 - the producer who rang me to confirm beforehand's name was Bill Birtles! He'd always been of the understanding he was related, but apparently a recent family tree suggests he's not. Lots of Birtles relatives turned up at the book launch and surprisingly quite a few of them had no idea of the others' existence. It was great fun.
