Interesting, thank you.
I suggest that the lock is not original (which is consistent with an individual having the key, and thus the box, assigned to them). Also, it appears the lid has been turned inside out to hide the "fragile" warning which would not be wanted for personal storage and should be visible externally if holding battery cells. In the process of turning the lid, I think they also swapped hinge and latch side based on screw holes. I don't know what the interior should look like so can't comment on whether the ribs on the ends are original or added to suit whatever the individual was using the box for. Not completely original, but when did anyone last see another, better for sale? |

Photos for the record
The text and photos from the ebay listing:
A fantastic 1945 battery box from world war 2 .Issued to VR Butler. Still has his leather dog tag attached to the key . It's in fantastic original condition. Great piece for reenactment enthusiasts. Or perhaps mount it on your ww2 vehicle ..or add it too your Royal Signals comms collection . This is obviously a special one with a working lock , key and the very rare addition of issued dog tags to accompany it. They are hard to find in such great condition . |

I have owned multiple original battery boxes and some reproductions that I got from Dave G. This is a really good example of a late war box, even if it has some mods.
