I found this photo from the Northern Territory Australia libary while searching though the Pictures Australia Website http://www.pictureaustralia.org/index.html It shows a 3 ton 12 cab CMP towing an 18 pound gun on the Stuart Highway at Manton River in the Northern Territory during WW2. I thought it unusual to see a gun being towed by a General Service 3 ton CMP.

| Towing

Cliff spoke to the old man about the pic , he said that on their return to Aust in late 44 from Dutch N,G, the trucks came from the motor pool with driver, mostly inexperienced in towing, most limbers done away with so everything went in truck with hair raising results down hills despite warnings from the gun crews.

You sometimes see 1960's TV docs made by people like the Leyland Bros. and Malcom Douglas ... they used to say the Cape York trip was a epic of endurance .. mud bashing and river crossings - but imagine what it was like in the 1940's and doing it in CMP's no less
