War Horse...The Movie

Gentlemen.....for Canucks only, at this point! This came across my desk today. As mentioned in an earlier note on the forum, Steven Spielberg's epic WW1 movie "War Horse" is to be released on Christmas Day 2011.
A special private screening has been set aside for Canadian Veterans this Wednesday Nov 16th. These screenings will be held in the following cities: Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.

Don't know if those helping the veterans to the movie will be let in free. You'll have to find that out when you call.

The movie deals with a boy, his prize horse and the horse being shipped off to the front during WW1. From all that I've heard and read...this is going to be a powerhouse of a movie and play.

The play opens in Toronto in Feb. 2012 at the Prince of Wales Theatre.

I have a problem thinking Veterans in their 80's and 90's would be on Facebook, but that's just me!

I watched the trailer and this movie will certainly be fantastic. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1568911/ My paternal grandfather was Canadian horse breeder and he gave me this love for horses. At the end of his life, he still had a very loving big mare named Nelly and I remember having slept on his back for hours without moving it to not make me fall. I know exactly how we can feel affection for a horse and vice versa. I think I'll shed few tears during this movie.

Just to add some further comment, I was fortunate to see the show in London a few months ago.

I can thoroughly recommend it to anybody, cannot say anything about the film, have not seen it, but the stage production is truly magnificent.

We could not take our eyes off the horses, and it was easy to forget that there were three people operating the "puppet".
Puppet is not the word, an engineering marvel, as my son used to be a drama student, he knew some of those in the cast, and we were fortunate to be able to go backstage after.

The story behind the story, it was written as a childrens book, is very moving.

To recap, the book was written after an encounter with a young boy who had had a very troubled upbringing, and as part of his re habilitation, was sent to a farm.
This boy had never spoken a word to anyone "ever" after what must have been a terrible ordeal.
One night, the person in charge was doing his rounds, and found the young boy talking to a horse, absolutely pouring his heart out.
A very moving story.


Please please please, see the show if you possibly can.

Sorry to go on, but my wife and I were very moved during the show.

Hi George and Bill: Thanks for the comments and insight. A close friend of mine from Victoria, who works in the movie business here in Vancouver, also saw it last year in London and like you George, couldn't say enough about the play. He was totally awestruck by the entire performance and echoed your feelings and emotions.

While we're on the the subject, I would like to give a vote of thanks to the individuals and groups who volunteered their time to help bring some insight to those involved with the production. My friend Charles was totally overwhelmed with the response through the MLU Forum, which also goes to show how much the Forum can accomplish....even if not with military vehicles.... but just helping out. Kudos!

I have a original full size book made up of pages (54) from the Halifax Chronicle, of Canadians and their Allies in battle during WW1. The pages are mainly photos with a description below. I have sent it down to him for the actors and production people to have a look at and get somewhat a feel of the horrors of the first world war. The pictures are pretty graphic in some cases.

My friend is under threat of "DEATH" if there are any damages or he does not return it. Hopefully it helps.

For that response, I felt I was going over the top a bit.

To hear that others had the same emotions is great.

I know at our performance the standing ovations for the cast was tremendous.
