Default Bogie Wheel Re-rubbering

Guys,

I was able to take my bogie wheel to a company in North Bay, Ontario, Canada, that specializes in casting rubber. I had contacted them regarding our situation concerning the bogie wheels on our carrier (especially the badly checked left and right rear bogies) and they were interested in taking a look.
Their applications engineer took a Durometer test of the spare bogie rubber and he indicated that it was a 70D and that it was synthetic rubber. He informed me that the best that his company could do was 60D. I told him that we weren't going to war with our carrier nor were we going to be putting a lot of miles on the carrier either. He is going to prepare a quote for me to strip, re-apply a 60 D natural rubber tire and turn the tire to the proper 20" outer diameter and tapered width. We are going to have them do all 6 wheels on the carrier plus the spare. I should get the quote sometime next week and I will publish the information on MLU. If there are other interested parties out there, maybe we could coordinate shipment of bogies into North Bay and try and get a bit of a discount?

Regards, Richard

Default Carrier wheels

I'm in for a 1/2 dozen (depending on cost!). I'm certain there are lots more chunked up carrier wheels out there.

Cheers! Mike

Default Rerubbering bogies: US & Canada

Ray,

Thanks for posting the address of URS. Any US crews out there might be better off sending their bogies to URS. I'm sure Canadian customs and duties paperwork might be a pain in the butt for you guys.

As soon as I find out the pricing, I will post price, company address and contact information for Canadian crews.

Regards, Richard

Default Bruce Mc Dougall

Hi Rich and all.
Re urethanes,we are involved in the shoe/boot trade, urethane used as footwear sole making material has a limited life span, like 6/7 years before it starts to crumble and break down(hydrolises(?)) ,There are some life extending additives available now maybe out to 12-14 years......So ask around of the companies offering retiring about how long the material can be expected to last .

Point 2 .In the shoe trade when the chemicals mix they give off a highly Toxic substance and at that point they must be handled with extreme care .The mixing and storage point are in a special sealed room to protect workers. The stuff is carcenogenous. We have heard of a service engineer dying of Cancer from limited exposure to the material.

So please if you plan to do this at home do lots of research on the material we want you all to live to a ripe old age ,and especially keep your family away if you insist on pressing on with home mixing.

Best Regards,
Bruce.

Default Safe Polyurethane re: Bogie Wheels

Bruce,

Thank you for your wise words of advice regarding polyurethane. I had considered doing a "pour" but I have now opted for purchasing a 20" OD by 15" ID by 8" wide polyurethane forklift tire and I will have a local machine shop machine the OD/ID and slit it to width to fit on the bogie rim. Much safer! I hope to have the shop start on it next week.
I will post pictures and an update on MLU under a new thread.
Many regards, Richard.

Default alternative

Rich I would be interested to see how successful it is using off the shelf forklift tyres and modifying them to fit

Cheers

Default All steel bogie wheels

Here is an image of the aft mounted single bogie without rubber, but all steel. The pair are mounted on a Mk. I*.

Default polyurethane

Well, I poured one wheel today with poly and it turned out OK. I got a small bubble at the filler hole, but nothing to worry about. I will pour the 2nd one tomorrow.Should be able to do a nicer job the 2nd time around. The cost is about $170 per wheel. Now to see how long they last.....

I have a pair of them on one of my carriers and they are the worst thing possible to have. The track guides are worn out to the point where I don't think they would last much longer, without rubber wheels being put on in place of the steel ones.
