Default M100 CDN trailer found in cross-border raid

Just to let the collective wisdom know I succeeded with a border raid (Ontario to Quebec) and laid hands on a Canadian made M100 trailer. Data plate intact with a serial number in the 12xx range. Manufactured in Winnipeg at MCI no less.

It needs a rear body panel, a 24v harness, plug and lights, and (sadly) a proper lunette towing hitch.

I found a previously unknown (and non sponsor) source for sheet metal in Maine - dub dub dub greenespanelworks.com. Has anyone used their products before?

As you are from Ottawa, we in the west do not consider this a border raid. Anything that is East of the Manitoba border is just that: East. You guys can steal from each others zones all you want. Don't try this on our side of the MB/Ont line without a permit however. Also, that line is actually somewhere just East of Thunder Bay.....everything West of Nipigon is Western.

All the Canadian M100 trailers were made at MCI. Must have been a conservative government in power for a contract to have left Ontario back then.

I forget the exact production numbers of the Cdn trailers, but 1200 would be getting up there I suspect.

Congrats on the find. I have a nice unmolested M100 kicking around the yard that has never left the yard in the years that I have owned it, but yet here she will remain. They are a neat piece.

Default location of CFR

Another forum has a thread on M100 CDN trailers, and someone mentioned the CFR will be found on the left tongue rail. I looked at mine, and unless the stamp is especially shallow, I don't see anything.

Would a kind soul look at their M100 CDN trailer and give me a better idea where to look - top, inside, outside, bottom? Measurement from a landmark? Size of the stamp font?

The CFR will not be there if the arm was ever changed. Try some paint strippers, or else fine sandpaper, but don't be too surprised if nothing is there.

One could normally find it painted on the sides of the trailer as well, but generally these were sandblasted away during the life extension project in the early 80s. Still can be found on the early releases from the Trudeau military downsizing era.

The sourcing of parts continues. For instance, I found an intervehicle cable along with four salvaged tarp hooks on epay. (There was an internet browser conflict that damn near made me personna non grata on ebay when I couldn't make paypal work!) Brian Asbury responded with a NOS lunette, a salvage tool box, 2x NOS lights and a new-build wiring harness.

There is no base for the tool box, and both Brian and local Jeeper Eric Booth have volunteered measurements and drawings. Likewise Eric mentioned the wiring harness guard would be easy to reproduce.

Two major tasks remain, namely unsticking the seized (on, phew!) brakes and repairing/making a new back panel to replace the cutout back end.

Default What No Photographs!

Hello Terry,

Being from Australia it would be good to be able to see what a Canadian post war trailer looks like. Plus I read through all the messages and not one photogaph has been posted

Kind Regards
Lionel

Default M100cdn

Here is an image of a pair M100CDN Trailers strapped together that was taken in Zagreb, Croatia in 1994. About 50 or so had been sent from the Canadian bases in Germany down to The Former Yugoslavia, most likely for UN use.

Default M100 Trailers from Germany

I was in Lahr in 1992 when we were equiping the Task Force for Croatia and everything went through the paint program as well as repairing all VIII CH M-100 trailers for shipment to Cambodia. We had a nice mod that turned a trailer into a Tent trailer when set up for 2 people. I wish I had pictures of this useful illegal mod.

Here is a picture of one of my two M100 trailers for my Recce Patrol. I just picked up in Belleville last month. Thanks Scotty for the info. Suprisingly brief for a piece of equipment that was in service for 40 yrs. 53-70177

There is a difference of 1056 numbers between these two serials. That is a lot of trailers!

I had CFR 70018 or 19...I can't remember. MCI serial number was 0019 (or 18) as well. I would suspect the 1/4 ton trailers started at 70000 and went up to 71250 or so. Maybe Scotty can run the M100 serial numbers and see where they end. That would likely give us a firm on idea of the production numbers.

Not to hi-jack the thread, but I am still looking for a decent M100 if anyone knows of one for sale, preferably in Ontario but always willing to entertain offers from elsewhere.
