Default 4993 update

Its been a while since I've update the progress on my carrier. After finally maneuvering it into the shed, my daughter and I spent some time at the weekend removing many years of crude from the base of the hull.

Default Blitz shot

Love the pic of the former ambulance in action. Not a lot of clearance for the crane! Nice work.

Great pics, always good to see an old Blitz in action.
Looked to be a great day weather wise for some outdoor work up there.

Default Tidy beginnings

Hi Euan, that's a nice old-school starting project. Hope it brings plenty of enjoyment.

What we find in the last 20 years is, well - pretty bad.
Having said that no-one has the right to complain because if what we find hadn't been modified or cut around, it wouldn't still exist to be rebuilt.

Alex

Default Brake rod failure.

Many years ago one of our club members had the clevis pull off the end of one of his newly manufactured brake rods. When this happens, your brake pedal goes to the floor and is useless. The only braking you have left is to pull on the other rod with the steering wheel but you need to know which side failed.
I believe the reason for the failure was that metric rod was used which was smaller in diameter than the original and there was insufficient thread depth.

Default probelmatic

Hi Dave,
I'm well aware of the issue and went to a lot of trouble to source imperial rod and to have the clevis CNC from high grade steel.
I can see how this could be a trap.

Default Engine cover

Final converted an early engine cover to a late cover with the addition of the Bren tripod mount and other plates/mounts.

Was that Rod McPhersons carrier ? I recall something like that happening at Jells park . You arrived with Rods carrier on your chevy LL truck . Would have been around 1980 ? Mike

About time we made some progress. Tracks sandblasted the blown over with flat black kill rust.

Rolling on.

Found the track winch works a treat.

Default Brake failure

Yes Mike it was Rod's Carrier and it gives me the creeps every time I think of it.
Immediately prior to taking it to Jells Park I had taken the Carrier to an event at the Corio Shire offices which are on high ground overlooking Corio Bay. The fellow arranging the vehicle display asked me to unload at the end of the forecourt where there was a fairly short, flat, grassed area before the ground fell away steeply to the bay. I must have had a premonition of what was to come as I could see the potential for disaster and unloaded the Carrier parallel to the shore line then spun it 90 degrees and carefully backed it into place.
As it was the brakes didn't fail until Rod went to shift it at Jells Park. He was moving the Carrier backwards when the brakes were applied and the pedal went to the floor. We continued rearwards and there was an Italian family picnicking on the ground behind us oblivious to the situation. I was right behind Rod looking over his shoulder and when I saw what was happening the ignition switch was in easy reach so I leaned over and flicked it off. Rod had depressed the clutch pedal but due to an incline we kept rolling back, however, when he let the pedal up we stopped.

Looking good Euan. Putting the tracks on gives a whole new perspective.

Dave
