My father gave me this wool-lined heavy winter coat, and I would like to know any details possible such as: what it was called, who used these coats, intended purpose (design), etc.
The coat is dated 1952, Dominion Garment Company (which I think was located in Guelph), and has a stylized broad arrow stamp. It is wool-lined and very long (Im 6'2", and it extends lower than my knees). Thanks!

Wayne.
Princess Auto in Winnipeg used to sell a wartime dated version of this coat many years ago and I have seen winter, wartime photos of a similar style in use, nearly always by guys sitting in jeeps. David |

Thanks David. That's interesting... my father always called it a "Jeep Coat".

I see that the coat has an inspector's mark "I S' over a stylized broadarrow with his personal number (?) below. This same format is in 1952 and 1953 M38CDN and M38A1CDN serial number data plates. Does anyone have further information on these numbers: Inspector E19 inspected my M38CDN and I'd love to know who he was.

Is the "IS" not for inspector services?
Wayne: I have always seen those coats listed as a Jeep coat. However, I have seen many of them with Naval markings indicating use in that branch. Whatever the branch use was, they are a extremely warm (albeit also extremely heavy) coat. Not sure if it's the insulation that keeps you warm or the effort of moving in it. |

Brian: My '53 M38A1 was inspected by what looks to be E18 (S/N F-200024).
