Default CMP tanker dating query

I am the IMPS vehicle verification officer and I am having a problem dating a Chevrolet 15cwt tanker with No. 12 cab.
The original manufacturers plate is missing and so all I have to go on is the engine number SR 3559819 (the prefix I cannot identify but the number is April - July 1940). However there i a chassis number stamped on the right hand front end that is 1798678. This I cannot identify and I need a date for this for the DVLA.
Can anyone help

Default CMP tanker dating query

Hi Tony,

I don't know if this helps but offer the following:

Looking at the hood (bonnet) opening on the truck pictured, I think it is a Cab 11. Also, is it a C15 or C15A?

The "SR" prefix on engine numbers was at least used on C15s.

The 1798678 stamped number is probably the part number for ''horn, front spring - right".

Do you think that water tank was the original use for that chassis?

Cheers,

Brian

thanks, Brian,
I do not know - apparently it was previously registered in Ireland but as far as I know there is no previous history before that.
This is the problem with something like this that can well have been cannibalized in previous military or non-military life.
The DVLA require proof of the date of build of a vehicle before they will issue an age related registration number. My mistake on the cab (senior moment) but if the worst comes to the worst I will try using the engine number as proof unless anyone can tell me where to find a chassis/build number xcept on the original dash plate.

Hi Tony,

I agree with Brian; the number in the front chassis casting is just the part number of the casting.

Chevrolets only carried the chassis number on the tag/plate in the cab, so if that's missing your best bet would be to see if the engine number turns up anywhere here on MLU, or in David Haydwards listings to see if it mentions a corresponding chassis number. To be honest; I had a quick look and found nothing so far. You could also check the chassis to see if a previous owner has had a number punched anywhere. What about the hictory of the licence plate......does that give you any info?

David's research can be found here:

http://hotrod.gregwapling.com/chev-t...dian-chev.html

Based on the pictures, it looks like a late 1940 built C15 cab 11 as it has the cab vents, which weren't introduced until the second half of 1940. If you inspect other details you might be able to narrow the build period down a bit more, but that's probably not what you are after in this case. I see it also has the stiffening ribs in the engine inspection panel.

regards,
Alex
Are you still running the modelling shop?

Thanks Alex,
Just as I feared - I will have to try to persuade the DVLA to accept the engine dating.
Yes, I do still have the model shop - you should come in when you are next in the UK.
