Default Rear Window - F8

Are getting to that point where I need to know how the rear window in the cab was fabricated. When it arrived my truck simply had the rectangular opening but nothing else, no frame, no glass, nothing. Would someone please post some pictures/drawings of what they're supposed to look like. Frame? Glass or Plexiglas? Sliding or fixed?

Any information any of you might have would be much appreciated!

ummm....Wot Glass????

I think most CMP's just had a roll up canvas cover for the rear cab window and this may be why you have no frame or glass for it.

Although I found this photo of an F8a and it shows what looks like a frame and glass.

You have 2 options .. the F8 and C8 used either the glass .. for the GS/personel version , or for the FFW version, a metal cover with turnbuckle clips for the speaking tube canvas thing. My C8 came with the original glass still there, it was a personel version. A screw in surround holds the glass in.

I have the drawing for it somewhere here .. stand by .

They used those turn buckle fasteners to fasten the canvas speaking tube to the cab .. the tube enabled the crew in the rear to communicate with the driver , you shouted down the tube . The idea and the whole concept came from the British 8cwt class . .. Morris Commercials .

This truck ( now resides in Yorkshire) has its original 1A2 body fitted ....

David Pope may have more info for you re: the rear window ..

I looked through all my pictures and they all have the metal back "window" with the rectangular hole for the speaking tube whether personnel or wireless versions. Here's inside and outside views of mine.

The early cab 11's definately had glass rear windows ..your truck pictured has the surround moulding that holds the glass in .... but sometime during its life its had a speaking tube panel installed .... In the above Ford factory pics...on the FFR version pictured, there isn't any glass moulding strip present , the panel fits straight onto the cab.

Here we are :

C8 with glass cab window .. looks like a factory pic . This is a personnel version as it doesn't appear to have the folding legs for the rear frame .

Default Cab rear "window"

I'm more used to 13 cab, 15cwt and above. Since you working on earlier and lighter, my thoughts might not help you. The later, larger trucks all seem to have been factory fitted with two sliding metal panels, some were later replaced with sliding plexiglas or glass panels, most likely after release from service.

Looked at my C8 today to see what rear window arrangement it had. Mine is odd in that it has the window moulding attached on the inside, but also shows traces of where a moulding had been on the outside, according to the old paint lines. There is also four rubber-padded clips in the corners to hold in a piece of glass.
Are these clips what originally held in the window? The reason I ask is that they look home-made. The truck has had a hard life and many modifications!
It was apparently a radio version due to all the grounding straps. Am I right in assuming this?
One other thing is that the recess in the window moulding, where the window should fit in, is exactly the same size as the hole in the back of the cab. So how would one keep the window from falling out without the clips or a second moulding?

I wonder if the glass or metal thing has to do with whether the truck was likely too see combat or not. They didn't seem to want any glass other than the windshield if they could help it and I can't blame them.

It looks like your turrett is a full glass one with the window shroud bolted on the wrong side .Should be on the outside as the paint line suggests
