Default New Addition to the Stable

Hello everyone,
Although I still have a lot to do on my F30 CMP I had the opportunity to save this Morris from sitting outside any longer or even the scrap man getting it.

Chassis no. C8 1927 10465 4 cylinder 4x4 16" wheels.

It had been used to cart timber out of the bush and has a few obvious post war mods. The heavy driver protection structure is easy to spot but what about the fenders and bumper bar etc?
What would it have been used for in the NZ army?
Are there any pictures around?

Comments would be appreciated.
Regards,
Terry

Default its a mobile potty

hi Terry

It appears to be one of the C8 MG 2 pounder portees .. or what's left of it ! A few of them have turned up over here , the other side of the pond . I know of at least one more in NZ .

The portee arrangement was a tilting rear tray , and it had a hand winch to pull the gun up onto the tray .... I think some of the Chev 12 cab version with same body , survive in NZ .. so you have a pattern somewhere to copy .

In the UK , they were converted into 17 pounder tractors . The antipodean survivors escaped this conversion .. and are still 2 pounder role type .

They seem to be fairly common in the UK , there is one for sale on MILWEB at the moment .

Pictured is another one .. don't know where .

If you twist Rolf's arm.. he may send you a pile of engine parts ... !

Thanks guys. keep the pictures coming.
It's amazing how much of the original stuff is still on it. Even the tyre pump and plumbing. Instruments are pretty good.
I am intrigued by the elaborate cab???? mountings
Evidently it was running ok when it was left 7 years ago from where I picked it up. No fuel tank and exhaust system now.
Cheers,
Terry

A friend of mine owned two of those C8 portees , back in the early 1980's . One came from the Pucka museaum when they decided to have a clear out of unwanted 'stock'.

The other one was an ex Hughes of Coburg truck , they had a few spares for them , engines and parts too, like NOS carbies , they also had a few engines that had been 'marinised' for use in boats .

My friend started the restoration , but had other project so sold them .

Following pics are from him .

The Pucka truck in the yard with other 'disposable' items the WW2 inters .

His second C8 potty, with a blitz cab fitted ... this came from a property north of Melb. We got this one running and drove it around for some fun .. very slow . This one came with a rec'oed motor as a spare engine .

Thanks for the latest pics Mike. They give me more ideas on how things go together. Especially the frame etc behind the seats. The fully restored trucks at shows look great but the photos of the un restored ones and wrecks are better for chassis details. That CMP cab looks just the part

A week ago I had no intention of having another project on the go. I am just starting on a new g/s body for the F30.
A month or so back my son in law sent me a pic of a derelict looking truck sitting in a demolition yard 1.5 hrs drive away. Had no idea what it was.
At our last military vehicle club meeting in Tauranga we had a dvd of a London to Brighton MV rally and I saw a Morris gun tractor. I put two and two together and did the deal on Sat.
We had a tilt deck truck to pick it up with but they were determined to use a forklift. Result badly bent driveshaft and tie rod.
I am going to take off the non military bits and store it for a while.
I like just looking at it. The workmanship is beautiful. My whitworth spanners will have to come out of retirement.
Cheers Terry

Ps. Aus and NZ will have to have a quiet game of rugby on our own somewhere. Boo Hoo
