Default Mystery Power Unit

Hi all,
I have been asked to identify this power unit belonging to an estate.
The wife of the late owner said he had mentioned that it was for starting aircraft. Almost certainly military because of the shielded ignition harness. Has "Lawrance" on nameplate. My thoughts are that it may have had a generator attached and been an auxillary generator for an aircraft.
Any ideas!
