Default Transfer case control linkage

I was recently looking at the parts list for the C30 and noticed that two types of linkage were shown for the transfer case. I've never seen the later version. Does anyone have knowledge of it? Did it work better or worse than the early linkage? It looks like it was simpler to produce by separating the funtion of the PTO from the front axle and range select, but how did the range select and front axle engage work, what was the spring in the front axle select for?

For what it's worth, the C60S, C60L and C15TA parts lists only show one type of transfer case control linkage, the one shown as the earlier C30 version. I think of the C30 as having been obsolescent to obsolete by late war, so why did they design a "new, improved" linkage for only this truck?

The C60X does show two types of linkage. In the case of the C60X they are controlling different functions but in general terms they looked similar, the early tower had a casting and the later version had separate levers.

C15A and C8A had single speed transfer cases (without PTO) and as far as I know never went to the fancy tower version like the C30 early.

Can anyone shed light on this?
