I imagine that the reason for closure would be lack of public patronage. The museum was not in a convenient location and had to be sought out and always played second fiddle to the aircraft museum.
Another factor would be that museums dealing with national history are becoming more and more irrelevant as the population demographics shift toward people who have no interest or connection with the countries past.
