Alastair the gear change should be quite good.
The same box in a wheeled vehicle drives nicely, once you know how to drive it. The carrier is a little harder due to its higher rolling resistance. Richard, If it was as you say, then I suspect some damage has occurred already, possibly at the intermediate bearing, or the input shaft bearing? Keep an eye on it.
