Another dumb CMP Chev question

Early Chev CMP steering columns were painted black. Did this practice continue so that all factory CMP Chevs had gloss black columns? If not, any guess when the factory started painting those columns the overall paint colour?

So basically my question comes down to...what is the right colour to paint a 1944 Chev steering column?
