A local airport is going to be renamed - it's currently named after a WW2 veteran and the council wants to rename it. So much for honour and remembrance.
Quote:
A friend in Australia tells me that the Shire of Exmouth Council is trying to rename its local airport (currently called Learmonth Airport) to Ningaloo Airport.
What's the big deal?
Well the current airport is named after Wing Commander Charles Learmonth, DFC and bar, a true hero. The Council intends to keep the Learmonth name but only for the RAAF base there which I'm told is not much more than a bare base which could be subject to closure.
More details of this proposed change (and about Charles Learmonth) can be found in the minutes of the Shire Council meeting held on 13th December 2007

If, like me, you feel that this is just another occasion when bureaucrats appear to have no sense of pride in their history, then can I encourage you to e-mail P J Anastasakis, Chief Executive Officer of the Council, shirex@exmouth.wa.gov.au and tell him what you think?
Feel free to spread the word, too, before it's too late. You'd certainly have the support of Charles Learmonth's relatives, who are upset by this, as you might expect!
